I am going to keep playing with the Apollo thing, but there’s a real chance I just end up using it for everything.

If I wanted to be the world’s greatest recording engineer, all of this outboard gear would be really useful, but if I want to be a great songwriter, having a unified system that gets me 95% of the way there might be better.

@collin I've always been fascinated by what sound engineers can do with the right equipment. And all that gear looks so, so tempting.

Alas, I've always been massively intimidated by the thought of how much learning, experimentation, and frustration it’d take to even begin to understand how to use that gear to good effect (no pun intended…). Hence, my Apollo Twin is the only non-S/W gear I use. Literally “enough” for some of us. 😎

@jochenwolters I mean, I know how to use it, and it’s great, but you’d be surprised how close that Apollo might get you.

Things like fancy preamps and compressors can be important, but they are less important than everything else.

So yeah, my outboard preamps and compressors and EQs do sound amazing, but so do the UA ones and in my situation having less stuff overall is probably the way to go.

@collin And how do you compare the workflow? For example, I think that the plugins are much more flexible, obviously and you can have many of them and at the same time and total recall. With hardware, though, it may be easier to get to a better result because of the physicality of the process plus you probably use the same hardware more and better know how it sounds and how to use it fast. But it’s limited in workflow features. And more expensive, duh.

@jacobgorban I've only been playing with it for like three hours, so don't really have a strong opinion yet :)

jacobgorban,
@jacobgorban@mastodon.social avatar

@collin Haha. Fair enough. Which Apollo did you get?

collin,
@collin@ruby.social avatar

@jacobgorban The x4 Heritage. I would've gotten the twin, but two inputs felt a little too limiting.

@collin @jacobgorban and the adat in & out

collin,
@collin@ruby.social avatar

@woolie @jacobgorban yeah that too.
