Online marketing specialists: "A mailing list is the most effective way to reach your customers. It has the highest conversion rate, because everybody on that list chose to be a subscriber"

Actual businesses: start calling their regular "Our Specials" maildrop a "Newsletter"

@uastronomer also businesses

sales adds you to their newsletter without asking and then you're wondering why you're being advertised on gig work QA services each week

@cendyne Oh yes.

That one.

@uastronomer I rarely read them - have a special folder where all of them are delivered and browse them in my free time. That said, it is a slippery slope and grey area where GDPR/POPIA is concerned. Mailchimp is barely or not legal at all - there are some alternatives available, but hey - it's like trying to change someone who uses W/App.

@pee actual newsletters, the ones that have actual stories or updates that matter to me? I read them because I'm interested and want to know what they contain. But there's an awful lot of dross that's nothing more than spam that tricked you into subscribing. Because there's an awful lot of people who've been in marketing too long and think that a rebrand actually changes the substance of a thing.

@uastronomer @pee the problem for me is time and even though I am supposed to read the product updates, I simply can't manage, with most suppliers hitting out Newsletters/Updates every 7-14 days - it's simply an overload of information, that's bombarding me. The real Spam I hardly ever see and the senders and/or domains are being blocked. So everything goes into a folder and when I have time I browse/read.

@pee Oh right, that's the third category I didn't think about. Stuff you're supposed to stay on top of, but aren't necessarily that interested in. Important, but not fun.

You, the reader, are welcome to to substitute "Spam" for "Maildrop". I wouldn't argue even if I could.
