Let’s imagine that a person has prepared lecture notes, tutorials, and all the material for a semester-long course, which she was allocated several months ago to teach for semester 1, which is starting in a week. /1

Now let’s imagine that she receives an email just before she is set to leave for a conference stating that she cannot reach the previously allocated course, but must reach a new course with different material she must produce, starting in a week’s time… /2

She starts a response saying “Is this a joke?” /3

“No” the answer comes. Apparently, the statement says she has taught many similar level courses before, and therefore must have material from those she can use for this new course.. /4

My question to you, dear reader, is: would this happen to an alpha male ? /5

@monsoon0 I don't know about alpha, but I have seen something pretty similar happening to a male colleague. The main difference (I suspect) is whether they apologize for the mess while asking you to teach a different course, or implicitly assume you are going to do it without making a fuss.

@j_bertolotti Ahh … apologies are scarce commodity in academia …

@monsoon0 For you to be in this situation it means somebody else messed up. Badly. It happens, but an apology and a recognition that what they are asking is unreasonable should be the bare minimum.

What would your advice be for a person in this position? /6

christianp,
@christianp@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@monsoon0 that's not OK! I'm not involved directly in teaching, but from my interactions supporting lecturers, I think something similar has happened here as a result of someone going away unexpectedly. At least we have a convention of sharing material, so nobody dropped in at the last minute has to prepare their notes from scratch.
What's the right solution for you? Would teaching the original course still work?

monsoon0,
@monsoon0@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@christianp Thank you for saying it’s not ok. I needed that …

KeithDevlin,

@monsoon0 @christianp Definitely not okay

monsoon0,
@monsoon0@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@christianp I am told the original course can’t be taught this year…
