A recurring story over the past four decades of Icelandic budget airlines

Iceland’s entrepreneurs: “If we sell enough tickets at below cost, we will magically turn a profit!”

Iceland’s “sophisticated” investor class: “That makes sense. Here’s a ton of money!”

@baldur feels like open source software development would be a good fit 😉

@pkra Hah! 😆

@baldur

"Sure, we're selling at a loss, but we're going to make it up in volume."

@baldur@toot.cafe avatar

@skjeggtroll Pretty much that exactly.

This happens again and again. Eagle Air. Iceland Express. Wow Air. Fly Play.

The business plan never works out. They always end up going broke, screwing passengers, investors, and employees. Investors always fall for it.

@baldur I wouldn't care much if those investors were gambling old-money investors, but those are our retirement funds.

@alda Yeah, same.

@baldur I do wonder if those schemes stem from the funds not being allowed to invest as much abroad as they could.

@alda

Probably! I'm sure that at least some of the fraud and fraud-adjacent shenanigans you see in the Icelandic startup and entrepreneur scene is because of all the dumb money with nowhere to go.

Some of it's just outright corruption, though.

@alda @baldur I think airlines in general struggle to make much money. They're generally terrible investments, the capital and regulation costs are really high. SAS has been doing poorly for years. Most airlines seem to need bungs from governments fairly regularly.

The opening line from this report "The airline industry has failed to earn its cost of capital in every year of its existence."..

@Ruth_Mottram @baldur Legacy carriers generally are due to competition from low-fare airlines and obligations towards their current and former employees.

But the thing is that some of them do stem from the times when some large corporations and joint ventures were social enterprises and at least some conservative business tycoons considered it their role to chip in to transport enterprises in that way.

My hometown used to have a ferry that was run in that way.

@baldur Are you saying this "List of defunct airlines of Iceland" needs updating?

@doktrock Not yet. Depends on how successful Fly Play is at raising additional funding to survive into 2025.
