I hate infinite scroll pages.

I've discovered The Atlantic makes their entire catalogue of issues (back to 1857) available online, but different eras have different URL schemes making it hard to programmatically download them.

Therefore I'm using ydotool to repeatedly mash the page down tool so I can load them all in a page then mass download them with Floorp.

A video of The Atlantic's digital archive page repeatedly being scrolled downward on a portrait monitor, loading more icons as it goes.

I find the colour gradient on the early issues very pleasing.

And here's their inaugural issue from November 1857 looking beautiful on my Yoga.

This piece from the March 1858 issue is focused on a music festival in, "A queer little welsh town," (that's not named but begins with the letter M), "with an androgynous population, or so it seemed to me, who had never before beheld women wearing men's hats and coats, and men with head-coverings and other articles of apparel of a very ambiguous description."

Going to see if I can figure out where this was.

First clue, the 'M____ Beacon' was their newspaper. I'm guessing this is Merthyr, but this might make it discoverable.

25 miles from Abergavenny. This is surely Merthyr.

He enjoyed our mutton, rabbit, and beer — but not at all our literature.

I didn't expect to find this bit about in the fifth issue of the first volume of The Atlantic, coming as it did in the run up to the US Civil War when I'd have thought they'd have better things to write about, but I'm very happy I did. This is a very fun read :)

"Oh, Absalom! Oh, Absalom! Oh, Absalom, my son! If thou hadst worn a good Welsh wig, Thou hadst not been undone!"

@rhys Plus ça change… Much of that could have been a column filler in a modern Tory rag.
