I am strongly considering moving away from Mastodon in the medium to long term future because of Eugen's absolutely abysmal handling of the spam situation and lack of prioritization of proper mod tooling.
@sam Hmmmm, in the last 2 days I’ve read posts from folks in my friends and friends of friends specifically talking about a bunch of new tools released and a bunch from Eugen that instances can choose to use. The admins would then integrate any chosen for their own instances.
I’m confused, is this post in regards to these new tools not being good, or a general observation? I thought some of them were specifically to fight the spam bursts many have gotten lately.
@cobalt Eugen hasn't released any new tools as far as I'm aware. He's suggested that instances that are dealing with spam account signups (mostly the abandoned instances we're all having to block whack-a-mole style) set up Captchas. This is not a solution for the thousands of other server admins who are having to deal with these abandoned instances.
I wrote one of the tools that made traction this weekend (Citadel). It's not enough IMO. It's still a PITA to moderate.
