hilarious that TogetherSF messed up so bad, both London Breed and Aaron Peskin are skipping its debate. maybe they are unifiers after all. unifying even rivals to stay the hell away from them

People are pissed about planters.

It saddens me to see them all interpret "planters" to mean specifically hostile, anti-homeless planters. Urban gardening is a good thing! It sucks that it's being hijacked.

https://missionlocal.org/2024/05/meet-the-district-9-candidates-do-you-support-the-planters-in-the-district/

A row of big, bulky, ugly metal troughs (and a few barrels) militaristically placed in a row to barricade the sidewalk, with unattractive spiky plants that are all the same.

Anyway, here's where to join our effort against hostile planters on San Francisco sidewalks: https://gardensnotbarricades.com

My favorite example of inclusive architecture in the Mission. People sit on these steps since it’s close to BART, and sometimes it got loud. The residents could have installed an iron gate or put up a scary No Trespassing sign. Instead they just set some ground rules: not after 10 so we can sleep, and pack out trash. So reasonable and neighborly! They built a tree bench as well.

Same steps, also showing a square wooden bench around a sidewalk tree.

"Miracle in Solano: California Forever unites Democrats and Republicans"

"**The point: **The California Forever project appears headed for a massive defeat in November. But the billionaires behind the proposed "tech utopia" have managed to pull off a true political miracle in 2024: uniting Democrats and Republicans – against their project. I got a sneak peak at more detailed polling data. In all of my years in politics, I've rarely seen anything poll this badly (besides Mayor London Breed, who has a 71 percent disapproval rating)."

If you walk in San Francisco you've probably noticed more and more hostile "planters" blocking sidewalks. I'm part of a group pushing back on this, Gardens Not Barricades, and now we have a website/newsletter. Join us!

"To cut down on fare evasion, we plan to hire three dozen additional transit fare inspectors. We have allocated money in our upcoming two-year budget to pay for these positions."

That's $5M/year less going to new operators who could relieve increasing crowding on buses.

If you have feelings about this, comment section is open

Fares are only 7% of SFMTA's budget, and fare evasion is at a lower rate than bridge toll evasion or parking fee evasion.

I’ve been reading about how tea culture got started in ancient China when tea drinkers / hikers / poets would bring tea making vessels on their walks and sit under structures drinking tea and writing poetry. How nice it would be to revive that in some way.

Hike and brew. Any donations at all to Cookie’s vet funds. :)

I’m such an idiot. It was the hottest day in years so I went out in a t-shirt and shorts and now I’m shivering. How could I forget? In the end, San Francisco always San Franciscos

I haven’t loved the vegan sushi in the Bay Area, but I’ve learned that’s not because it’s vegan but because it’s not fancy enough :) (I’m very spoiled and I only like fancy sushi)

I truly feel that the moment I liberated myself from the ideas of ‘doing / learning things for productivity / success’, my relationship with everything changed. Like wdym I can learn typography without becoming a designer, learn to play an instrument without ever performing, and just.. be?

There’s a lot of info about ‘perfecting a craft’ but I’d bet it would help most people to just ‘dabble in a craft’

The doom loop is reactionary policies

Defunding social services. Hiring more cops and jailing more people. Barricading sidewalks with "planters." It does not work to solve any of San Francisco's problems, it makes them worse and right-populists capitalize on our fear that results from that to do more of it.

How parklet owners are interpreting “open 7am to 12am”… 🤔

The parklet is mostly locked but a small area is outside the fence

scott,
@scott@carfree.city avatar

@timrichards @meganL Yeah I mean, that space used to be a parking space, so it's one less car. In a way I agree that's beneficial for mode shift as far as it goes, but... walking down sidewalks where there's locked parklet after locked parklet after locked parklet, so that the sidewalk is walled in on both sides, is not pleasant, and I think part of why Valencia Street (where that is) has become less fun, honestly.
