I'm so close... Still, I reckon others around here can do it better!

@sarajw Ahahaha I might just print that (or a variation thereof) on a shirt — would that be ok?

sarajw,
@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

@daniel absolutely! Ping me if/when you post it so I can see it 😄

daniel,
@daniel@social.telemetrydeck.com avatar

@sarajw will do!

martin,

@sarajw privacé is not a word, but I can't figure out if it's part of the joke 😅

sarajw,
@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

@martin It's only trying to crowbar 'privacy, security, accessibility' into the French 'liberté, egalité, fraternité' style. It's not very clever!

sarajw,
@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

@martin also please do tell me if it's offensive or just silly?

What would be the French for privacy, in the context of the web? Confidentialité?

__Styx__,

@sarajw @martin the joke with privacé is quite good in my opinion
If you want a truly French way of saying it,
You should precise which meaning of "privacy" you want to convey

On the "don't expose publicly all my life/data" there is the word™ "vie privé" in place of privay

The synonym "intimité" has another meaning on the bedroom / sex side of life, so it could be viewed as something else more touchy like data of you naked, or in your bathroom etc

If you mean "doesn't reveal your real life" you could go with "anonymité" which is akin to anonymity and how online activity shouldn't be followed to your public self

@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

@__Styx__ @martin thank you!

martin,

@__Styx__ @sarajw Very good explanation. And it does kinda ruin the joke if you want to use the "correct" word.

And I don't think it's offensive.

sarajw,
@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

@martin @__Styx__ yes - closest in meaning seems to be vie privé but agreed it doesn't then so closely follow the look of the original motto. I think anonymity and privacy are somewhat too different 🤔

__Styx__,

@sarajw @martin yeah they can both converge on some subject but not in general

Honestly, your first motto is good enough to me, since it fails at the 3rd step of accessibility by not correctly translating the first word in the targeted language
Thus, "yes I can use foreign letters" but "no, I can't even use real words instead of auto generated translation"
Becoming an exemplary failure
😁
And on a more poetic side, privacé "could" be a word if history was a bit different
I should ask Quebec's friends if they naturally understand privacé in their franglish head

sarajw,
@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

@__Styx__ @martin maybe it's a web-development creole (or pidgin?)

__Styx__,

@sarajw @martin by definition, words start being words once they're used and understood
So if privacé reach enough people, it will become a real word :shibasmile:

sarajw,
@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

@__Styx__ @martin truuueeee.

The French are a little more picky about new words though, what with the Académie Française not liking loanwords - whereas English is rather more chill about them!

__Styx__,

@sarajw @martin well the Academy francaise is in a league of its own :blobPikaNauseous: they're not even only advocating old standard, but a specific old standard that was short lived !
They fight new words even when fully French based, but try to shove google trad level of english based words with literally 0 usage
Newsletter → infolettre
Follower → Acolyte des illustres (Acolyte of the illustrious)

It's pretty much a publicly paid think tank where old scrouge gather until they die while arguing about fake French problems

sarajw,
@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

@__Styx__ @martin lolol I love this characterisation! Fair!

labellaragassa,

@sarajw 100% this! I want one too! These should be the fundamentals of the web!

sarajw,
@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

@labellaragassa also yes they are - I feel like they're three solid principles that just have to be kept on top of.

sarajw,
@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

@labellaragassa I bet both @heydon and @SteveFaulkner could put their own good spins on this
