The creators of the Mary Tyler Moore Show wanted Mary to be divorced, but one of the studio heads
nixed that saying there are 3 things people don't like: people from New York, people with mustaches,
and divorced people.
There was also a fear that viewers might think she had divorced Dick Van Dyke.
