@n3wjack It's a split for me - my monitors are connected to a Windows PC, partly out of familiarity, but largely for software like Office, Altium & Solidworks... that said, I virtually always have one or more SSH connections to a more powerful Linux system, where nearly all the rest of my activities are carried out.
@n3wjack This won’t tell you “how the OS spread is on the fedi,” just the OS spread among the people who see this post and choose to respond. But I wonder if there is some kind of analytics or a stats site that will give you that info.
@n3wjack i've got a linux laptop that i barely use, and i use windows for work, but for my next computer, i'm thinking about getting a mac, since that feels very geared towards designers
@rozina yeah, designers seem to swear by it. I just don't like how Apple tries to suck you into their ecosystem by making interop harder with non-Apple stuff.
@n3wjack@Elrick_Winter you can listen to music on Linux... and for games, there are many free software games that are great, or, there are games that don't need a computer at all, and those are the best 😂

A lot of them run on Linux now though, so things are getting better.
@n3wjack hoo boy i voted windows, my personal experience with windows makes me feel like a lucky bastard sometimes whenever i hear other people say their windows experience was an utter nightmare lol
for one i don't really have any problems personally with windows 11 when it comes to actual user experience, really my only gripe was the taskbar not being movable anymore, so i just got a copy of startallback and put it on the left like i usually do. + a neat lil taskbar button icon i made myself
i have tried linux! the first distro i ever got working was debian stable with the help of a friend, using the gnome desktop environment. i really like the experience for what it is, but unfortunately since i like to draw in clip studio paint and edit 12+ minute YTPs in premiere pro, until wine compatibility's improved i'd either have to start dualbooting or stick with windows' ecosystem as i'm already comfortable with that
i distinctively remember having kasane teto as my wallpaper on my debian instance. originally i was going to try XFCE to see if i could get compiz working because like, despite my tolerance with windows i will admit the customization isn't nearly as open-minded as linux. plus like have you SEEN that fucking 3d desktop cube thing? or the wobbly windows? the only way to get that on windows is through stardock so i'd have to cough up another 20 bucks for it to work, and even then i doubt they'll be maintaining it per windows updates
with alternate software that works on linux, i do like krita! i was able to get a similar-ish experience after some hassle but my personal deal breaker is how the fill tool is unable to close gaps in linework. due to the wonders of "open source development" it hasn't become a feature outside of the planning stage for the last few years and the only thing that exists right now is a python script that i don't know how to use in krita. they just like gave me it and provided no guide whatsoever
considering windows is legitimately the least amount of votes on this poll i figured id actually explain why i've stuck with windows despite microsoft's attempts to make it less habitable for me (in a situation where i don't really give a darn as long as i can do my usual tomfoolery without the operating system telling me i should buy a digital rock or something)
started with windows 7 home i believe on a shitty little green acer laptop
@rustMotherboard Windows pretty much just works. With Linux I found you end up spending time getting basic stuff to work. This is why I basically stick with it.
@n3wjack personally i do think once you figure out how to do things on linux to get things to "just work", it can become a nice working environment. i was able to get a lot of debian stable to "just work" other than some customization which was actually pretty easy to get through
it started getting complicated when i tried to run anything through WINE other than a version of foobar2000. i'm sure easier solutions exist to get software such as clip studio paint running (as i have seen people get success out of it) but i always had trouble with it. same with getting a windows VM to reliably run (and if anything made me miss my proper windows setup more)
i've been told GNOME might be the reason due to its resource usage? i haven't been able to check since i don't want to go through the whole installation process, especially when i don't have a decent USB as of right now to load a new .ISO onto
to this day i still don't really get why microsoft stripped the taskbar that badly, the windows 10 taskbar i never had troubles with (hell i kinda liked the tile approach for a while but windows 8's mandatory use of it gave me a bad taste for a while) and had a lot more options. like if you're going to one-up the taskbar in its design wouldn't you also make sure it keeps the same features with resizing and position? like you couldn't even just flip it vertically for the taskbar on the top???
im just glad a solution exists at all that isn't just sticking to windows 10 for a few more years

@rustMotherboard Yeah I don't want to go down that route really. I have some Windows specific stuff I like to use (music production and games mainly) so I don't want to spend time trying to get that to work on Linux.
Now with WSL you can run Linux software on Windows, so that's even less of a reason to switch these days. For programmers, that is an awesome Windows feature.
@n3wjack i've heard and seen WSL in action before! it's a really neat feature that i'm surprised even exists on windows in the first place
not only have i seen it be able to run linux apps with interfaces seamlessly with windows, but its actually also able to run entire desktop environments if you set up a remote server...granted i'm not sure how good the connection would be on that but its really cool how that can just exist at all (compared to a run of the mill virtual machine). either WSL2 or WSLg is able to do that
on the other hand it does make getting the actual distros themselves less appealing if you're in the windows ecosystem, since you can also just run anything you need from linux onto windows and mess with it from there
@rustMotherboard yeah, that's the appeal really. I can run any Linux app without bothering setting up a dual boot system, or a virtual machine. And its fast too.
@n3wjack My laptop has a dual boot of Kubuntu and Windows 11 with it defaulting to Kubuntu. I still use Windows slightly more, though, mainly because that’s where all my music is.
@n3wjack I have an older iMac 5K, but I hardly ever use it. My iPad Pro is faster, the software is superior and it is always with me, while I have to go to my office to use my Mac.
My point was more than you ignore how powerful something like the iPad Pro is, quite a lot of people don’t need a laptop anymore.
@DavidNielsen True. It depends on what you do daily with the device. Tablets and phones can do most common tasks these days. I see people in my family not needing laptops anymore, except for work.
@n3wjack linux exclusively for a couple years now, pretty much everything just works. all my games work, fl studio and all my plugins for it work, all other software I ever used is either natively supported or has at least one great alternative available, and updates never make my computer worse anymore. it's very boring
the only time I touch windows anymore is for sim racing, because software support for some wheel drivers and accessories doesn't quite meet my needs on linux yet (though my current wheel does work fine!), and every time I turn that computer on it finds a new way to give me a headache
