Imagine if all the money and effort going to train LLM was used for developing better solar technology and to create tools that were more energy efficient

@hugoestr

What if someone trains an AI model to create precisely the tech you're looking for?

I'm seeing a lot of new things in material sciences being discovered this way currently.

@hugoestr

Not to mention huge leaps in things like radiology scans, AI models are catching cancers that human specialists are missing.

I know the people who created this technology personally, they are noble and intelligent people doing good with the best tech available to them.

@echevarian @hugoestr again, that isn’t being done by ChatGPT or Gemini, but by specially trained deep learning models using far more precise data sets and far fewer resources.

He specifically said LLMs, and while yes, they are smaller models, they are definitely using ChatGPT to bolster their smaller models and that tech is pretty important to them functioning at all.

Arguably without some of this frenzy of venture capitalist speculation that money wouldn't be going towards this research.

I know I definitely use ChatGPT to plug holes in my own coding knowledge on a regular basis, it does have serious utility.

@echevarian @tealeg @hugoestr we already know how to solve climate change; the problem isn't technological, it's political.

We knew how to solve it 150 years ago.

@alexhammy @tealeg @hugoestr

It is technological in the sense that if we abruptly try to move to zero carbon agriculture about a third of the people alive are going to starve to death.

There's no easy answer to the situation, going back to the 1870s as far as emissions means mass starvation and probably WW3.

@tealeg @hugoestr

I'm not an AI cultist, I don't think general AI is right around the corner and that it's a golden age. OpenAI has mostly existed to capture and suppress competition in this market, and Google is one of the more evil surveillance organizations on the planet.

I don't think throwing data center compute at every problem is going to solve it, but for some really serious issues like material sciences, healthcare, and even solving issues around climate change it's really important

@hugoestr

This! We are channeling all our smart young engineers into rigging ponzi schemes instead of making real things that might even actually be useful for saving the planet.
