The "random things happen randomly" rule when applied to activities that hold the real possibility of lethal outcomes should give concern enough to cease the activity. However, I agree the "has not happened in twenty years" lulls as a rationalization even though it has nothing to do with the probability of random events actually occuring.

After years as an EMT in the field and a critical care nurse in a regional trauma hospital, I can recall many folks eligible for the "here, hold my beer" of the month award. They also forgot about gravity or other facts of physics, and forgot that random events actually happen randomly not on their schedule.

@DemocracySpot It is a popular holiday activity in various places domestic and foreign. People get so pumped they forget gravity exists. We are a silly species.
@DemocracySpot omg! I could not live in a place like that. I just couldn’t. I guess if that’s where I was born I might be used to it somewhat. But I cannot imagine.
