One thing even careful people still struggle with is how all-or-nothing #COVID really is. You can try to gather outdoors and it'd be miles better than some stuffy classroom or business, but it's still airborne. A stable virion entering your body and establishing itself is all it takes.
You can limit the time you spend in less safe places- that is objectively safer- but this isn't actually a problem of time so much as the actual covid in the air, and whether it can actually get inside of you.
