I rant about covid. You might say that it's "become my whole personality". I agree; people in survival mode don't have much energy for personality.

I write prose and horrorish fiction, which comes quite naturally to me because I'm terrified in general.

I play tabletop games and it's probably a control thing.

We should all be wearing respirators and sharing resources. #CovidIsNotOver

"How much longer are you going to do this?"

I don't delude myself with the fantasy that I've never been infected- there is some very doable math that suggests otherwise- but I'm aiming for however many years of decently-abled living I have left, and I don't intend to shorten that any further.

I'm not gonna stop doing this and I'll fight for my right to do it, because I don't have another option. None of us really do, but a depressingly-small amount actually realize it.

I'm not here to hold hands. I'm not here for comfort. In fact, my goal is to introduce folks to an amount of existential discomfort; to overwhelm them, so that they have no choice but to stop pretending and spend the energy to protect themselves, maybe even others.

I'm not here to help you roleplay like the world is in an even semi-functional place. Twenty shoes are dropping at once.

There is a lot to do, but it starts with safety and a caring community. That's Step 0.

"They all wanna blame my drinking. I've been drinking since I was sixteen so that isn't the problem." - An actual sentence from an actual dude. 🎊

I must have just overlooked the settled science around regularly-imbibing poison during adolescence, and persisting in the habit for more than fifteen years, and how that makes you stronger over time instead of wrecking your health. /s

accelerates countless health issues in a number of ways too. Some people are coping extremely hard out here.

I lose followers every time I talk about how Over this may already be, how is a spectrum that I am actionably-certain we are on if we have ever had an infection, symptomatic or not. I don't delude myself with the wishful thinking that we can clear this from our bodies.

To those in denial; I wish I was wrong, I wish the air we share was as safe as we are told it is, and I wish you luck.

I hope you don't hurt anyone else while our pyramid scam of a society helps you hurt yourselves.

trashcaster, to random
@trashcaster@open-source-eschaton.net avatar

I'm saying if you actually give a shit to live as full a life as you can, there is no minimum amount of that is okay to expose yourself to. The nature of the bug is to establish itself and persist. We are already being perforated by prior infections as a population. We are seeing the effects of immunocompromisation on a societal scale with the resurgence of diseases which we can no longer fight off under the burden of this compromisation. Illness in general should be avoided at all costs.

trashcaster, to random
@trashcaster@open-source-eschaton.net avatar

One thing even careful people still struggle with is how all-or-nothing really is. You can try to gather outdoors and it'd be miles better than some stuffy classroom or business, but it's still airborne. A stable virion entering your body and establishing itself is all it takes.

You can limit the time you spend in less safe places- that is objectively safer- but this isn't actually a problem of time so much as the actual covid in the air, and whether it can actually get inside of you.

trashcaster, to random
@trashcaster@open-source-eschaton.net avatar

If you want to quickly find out who around you actually has the capacity to give a shit about themselves or others, simply refuse to role play as if we live in a functional society that has any of our best interests at heart.

The betrayal some will feel when you assert the reality of this situation; the restless anger that will turn on you the moment you stop lying for everyone- the moment you vocally assert the contrary to the fairy-tale notion that "everything will be okay".

You sprinted by- but it was there again now! Waiting for you! The print was curling away from the walls!

You could watch it happen if you'd only found the calm or exhaustion to stand still and stare a moment. Every soft spiral of brittle, floral-patterned paper shearing from its anchor, leaving tracks that twisted back toward their patient nexus like the star-churning limbs of some cosmic amalgam.

I just want to play my idiot games for a couple hours. Cut the standard hedge maze down to a single topiary for a while and just Do Less.

Nothing dysregulates my autistic ass faster than devices suddenly refusing to accept input, or going dark. No feedback, no responsiveness. 😂

I am suddenly reformed, forced back into meatspace, staring into the dead-pixeled black mirror of some monolithic slab; the utilitarian nihilism of our times writ large in the murky dissatisfaction of my own reflection.

One would rather be one of those that are at the behest of what they'd Rather It Be, than be one of these that are beholden to the burden of the Actuality Of It, I suppose.

One would rather harbor a garden of burgeoning falsities than assess the necessary accessories, the exocortices; that restlessness of matter and mind that may afford respite within tomorrow's floods that threaten ever-looming.

I hang, lazy and self-assured from the soma tree, vileforked-tongue-drips-truth; I'm ever-dooming.

It's a small hell to smile and nod for people who don't see their own victimhood in an escalating class war.

"My memory just isn't what it used to be."

I hear ✨many✨ people saying this. I want to tell them it's likely a brain injury from the repeated covid infections they were manipulated into accepting, but that's terminally none of my business; my confidence in that reality at a societal scale doesn't give me any cover to assert it to them. It's taken quite aggressively.

Wish covid was too.

trashcaster,
@trashcaster@open-source-eschaton.net avatar

@NilaJones And it's doubly frustrating because they so often open the door to it! I don't want to miss an opportunity to at least plant a seed, when as far as I can see, a deeply-confused person is asking for comraderie and empathy, but if I take the opportunity to disturb them with the highlighted fundamentals of our shared struggle, that effort will often be taken in a hostile manner, via this eugenicist-flavored lensing of heavily-propagandized denial.

Had a guy and his son come through and make a scene about my mask, telling me to speak up. I did. They started hostile and I didn't wear the kid gloves for them, so they left in a bigoted huff.

My next customer was literally deaf. I downloaded a screen mirroring app to help us talk and spent half an hour narrowing their purchase down to the parameters they needed, making sure they got what they were looking for.

I can speak to anyone through this respirator, but I was never fluent in Asshole.

Respect yourselves. Stop letting people tell you that the reason kids sleep twelve hours and can't remember breakfast is from missing a few months of school years ago, and not from sitting in rooms full of filthy air, cycling a degenerative plague back and forth for years after.

"immunity debt"
"desocialized"

You should be livid that you were ever expected to believe such bald-faced bullshit. You should be livid for the life they stole from all of us, and especially, from your very sick kids.

trashcaster,
@trashcaster@open-source-eschaton.net avatar

@jik @BritishTechGuru I'd be concerned if a covid infection didn't provoke much of an immune response in me. I'd wonder what's going on with my immune system.

We've been led to see disease only for its acute effect and to ignore the underlying damage. In fact, a lot of our vaccines only go as far as to suppress the acute effect. They don't actually keep diseases from harming us through a variety of other, often-more-permanent complications.

In covid's case these complications are innumerable.

trashcaster,
@trashcaster@open-source-eschaton.net avatar

@tonytownsend That's a nice thought, Tony.

It seems that in some sense, you're asserting that I don't have anything of substance to offer you here; that there's nothing coming out of my mouth that you could make much use of.

In your case I find myself- however reluctantly- in some agreement.

If you still have family, I would recommend that you mask in a P100 and spend as much time with them as you can. Years are being taken from our lives. It isn't going to slow until we stop ignoring it.

Customers are getting asky. I guess this looks more fun than it is. I'm "not old enough." I just tell them that there are twenty-four new stairs in my life, with-which I must negotiate regularly.

Can always count on Americans to get vocally-curious about private issues sooner than later, long as no one mentions covid.

Sell me another fake world.

Something that pretends to care.

Something that plays at having a point.

Sear it into the transistors; burn every pixel; keep it bright, clear and loud, in the viewfinder of my black box.

I huddle by the HEPA, recede into the cursed, technicolor tarot of this looking glass while the trees gnarl outside and the windows slicken prismatic from their edges inward.

That steadily-shrinking iris of clarity, imprisoned by a rainbow-relentless perimeter of swelling grime.

A lot of folks didn't just cut ties with family; some of us are cutting ties with society. We looked for abusive patterns in our life and history; refused the myths pushed on us about the necessity of our abuse on an interpersonal, and indeed, global scale.

"Escapism" they call it- when we try to render better worlds- and they are infinitely-generous to that shameful mirror of a term. They never fail to leave wholly-unexamined the horrifying artifice surrounding us; This thing we try to escape.

If someone tells you Americans have "decided" something "as a country", maybe stop listening to them. That isn't how countries work and it's certainly not how America works.
