Are there any developers who have nailed using the Windows keymap for #PHPStorm on Mac?
I'm used to Windows, but my work laptop is a Mac. I'm using the XWin keymap which fixes some things, but of course all the shortcut hints are still in 'Mac language', so I have no clue what to type when I look one up.
@thomastospace Back when I switched from Windows to Mac, I had similar issues. I also tried adjusting the shortcuts to fit the Windows style. But it just never 100% worked, because then there's Copy & Paste and other universal shortcuts that don't work in $randomApp and I just ended up being very confused.
Fast forward, I'm now developing on both Mac and Windows, and I'm just using the shortcuts as presented by the OS. Took effort to learn, but it's way less confusing and cumbersome.
@can Yeah... I'm never gonna get used to that tbh. I've used Mac before, and I can't get used to two different ways. The result will always be less than how I'm currently performing on Windows.
@thomastospace Just wanted to share my experience. I can understand if it works different for you. I'm pretty weird when it comes to shortcuts. Whenever someone asks me "what's the shortcut to do what you just did?" I just completely blank out and I can't tell them. I can't even perform the shortcut in that second anymore. It's just gone. It only works if I don't think about it and let my subconscious press the keys. Somehow it can distinguish between Mac and Windows though 😂
Yeah, I also can't remember shortcuts. They're just in my head. Which is also why moving to one of them to two of them is just not gonna happen. This is 20 years of training that I'm not gonna relearn for an OS 😅
@thomastospace Yeah it's really a shame that they're not using the same keyboard layout and shortcuts. It just makes a lot of things much more complicated with absolutely no benefit. It's not like any of them are better or worse. It's just the same, but different.
@jaapio@can I'm considering installing Linux, but not sure how well that's working on an M2 mac.
First gonna go with Debian on my PC and see how that is in 2024. If I can get used to that (very likely. I've used Ubuntu before), then I'm gonna consider putting it on my Mac.
