I've finally had enough of zsh. Going home...

$ bash --version
GNU bash, version 5.2.21

@carlton Inferiority complex speaking up. What are y’all doing to notice a difference.

@kjaymiller zsh is fine, really. But there are little differences from bash that crop up in usage and scripting that cause issues. (The one you’ll likely have seen is the difference in [] expansion, meaning you need quotes for pip install, but there are others.) Bash is the default shell everywhere else I go. The supposed features of zsh that might appeal don’t, and so I’m swapping back for my own experience. (Apple only ever changed for licensing issues anyhow)

I've tried. I really have. But no benefit, and an endless little stream of papercuts.

Apple's licensing issues aren't my problem (anymore 😜)

@carlton This is what keeps me on bash as well. It works. It's truly boring tech that I never think about.

When that one thing doesn't work with zsh or fish, I find it so jarring that I switch back.

I think starship addressed all of my zsh shell customization envy.

@webology I’m such a caveman, I still need to give starship a run.

@carlton I recommend it. It's good tech with sensible defaults, and yet it has the right knobs and switches to adjust it.

It also makes switching to other shells easier because you can bring your shell prompt's formatting with you.
