I am going to get a gaming PC, does anyone have any advice for someone many years ago used to build them but hasn't used anything other than a laptop in years?

@PurpleBooth Happy to help with specs for a budget to pick balanced parts!

Consider the games you’re playing, the resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, whether you want to use things like NVENC encoding for streaming, or DLSS for upscaling (which is v good these days)

The building part really hasn’t changed much in decades. If anything it’s easier now with cases that provide much better building experiences.

@brunty Probably want to spend a bit over 2K, mostly for a bit of very occasional ML stuff, but mostly a headless box for parsec, for light gaming (stardrew valley, surviving mars, nothing terribly taxing, etc), and a bit of beatsaber.

@brunty At the moment I use a vm on paperspace, the P4000

8 GB GPU
30 GB RAM
8 vCPU

And that handles everything I need fine, but the latency is a pain, and I am using it too much these days for it to be economical

@PurpleBooth I just specced up this: https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/vms4kJ

The 7900X3D is only £20 more expensive but better in games (but not as good elsewhere sometimes)

I did prices in £ and it has a 4080 Super which could be dropped to a 4070 Ti Super and would still do very well

@brunty Amazing, thanks this is really helpful, thanks for taking the time to do that

@PurpleBooth what you had in your list was a good choice, last-gen Ryzen parts are quite cheap now and it's still an option!

@brunty Will probably go with a riff on what you suggested with a bit more ram, and a diff card on the same chipset (got rid of the RGB ram as I probably am going to hide the box somewhere). Now I will wait a day and see if this seems like a good idea still lol https://de.pcpartpicker.com/list/MncnqR

@PurpleBooth (and with Windows, go get a key from a key site if you want, you can save €100+ doing it that way)

@PurpleBooth And look for offers on NVMe drives as you can sometimes find 2TB for around 100 and 4TB for a little under 200
