Guys I have the mother of all reply guys on the line

@inquiline I’ve got a few of those dudes. Ugh

inquiline,
@inquiline@union.place avatar

@skinnylatte I'll bet you do, like for real :solidarity:😭

adamgreenfield,

@inquiline wait what

inquiline,
@inquiline@union.place avatar

@adamgreenfield start here (scroll thru):
https://wizard.casa/objects/018e922e-91ad-5c9e-6daf-a351ee56b837

This person then messaged me again last night before bed:
https://wizard.casa/objects/018e9858-9999-f147-98ac-1a1ab770144f

Yet another person had replied to me the other day (the day our other friend was also being supremely annoying) to (condescendingly) tell me to ignore trolls and it's like man you don't understand these people are not trolls, they are supremely maladjusted FOSSbrained dudes, and it's even worse

adamgreenfield,
@adamgreenfield@social.coop avatar

@inquiline oh good god. is there something in the water lately?

inquiline,
@inquiline@union.place avatar

@adamgreenfield I'm still waiting for this person to explain how we can rationalize the contradiction btwn absolute purity in software and morally compromised hardware, too. By their argument they should not address me, which funnily enough is my argument too 🤔

@adamgreenfield Actual lolol (natch)

One of my mutuals said yesterday he's using my replies as a blocklist and WELL

adamgreenfield,
@adamgreenfield@social.coop avatar

@inquiline I think he blocked me too! At least I was not able to click on this one guy’s profile when I looked, despite having not to my knowledge done anything at all to offend him.

inquiline,
@inquiline@union.place avatar

@adamgreenfield I very much doubt you're blocked but it might be a federation thing, this person is on some slightly other kind of (morally pure) software (beyond my ken)

In any event, please do savor "wizard.casa"

and yes I think something is definitely in the water.

@inquiline @adamgreenfield not the frogzone!

beadsland,
@beadsland@disabled.social avatar

@inquiline Time to find the side-matter on a cereal box or something for some distraction?

inquiline,
@inquiline@union.place avatar

@beadsland Fortunately I'm going to bed where I will no doubt argue with scrolling text in my sleep! Thanks for kindly bearing witness to my foibles here

I'm going to delete my surly reply, and seriously consider muting replies to all posts, but ofc that will cast a much wider net than intended

luis_in_brief,
@luis_in_brief@social.coop avatar

@inquiline genuinely, I think this is something all unions in text-heavy spaces (journalism in particular, but also academia) should be fighting for specific related benefits. If your job is to communicate online, your workplace should give you additional specialized mental health benefits, free blocking tools and training, anonymity tooling, etc. etc.

inquiline,
@inquiline@union.place avatar

@luis_in_brief Really good point. What I'm complaining about here is really my own entrainment/socialization, but YES

luis_in_brief,
@luis_in_brief@social.coop avatar

@inquiline for better and (usually in this moment) for worse, you're not the only one with this entrainment/socialization! The stories of what journalists, in particular, endure in order to Be Online are just... horrifying.

But I have kept an eye on union negotiations in the media space for this for a while, and have never heard hide nor hair suggesting this. :(

inquiline,
@inquiline@union.place avatar

@luis_in_brief That's really interesting. I've read "self care" and "what enlightened managers should know" genre pieces about this issue (in academia and journalism), but yeah not union space (tho I'd probably not be especially likely to encounter this myself anyway)

luis_in_brief,
@luis_in_brief@social.coop avatar

@inquiline judging from some convos with lawyer friends in this space, it seems that this sort of thing just hasn’t come onto the radar of union organizers yet — they’re very much working from a traditional “menu” of benefits/harm-reduction that newly-organized workplaces should ask for, and this Very Online Harm just hasn’t made it into the playbook yet.
