Driving engagement - what is it?

Is it having a car that keeps you occupied with noise, gear changes and having to be active to get it along a road?

Is it one that leaves you to get along the road and pay attention to all of your surroundings rather than fussing unduly with the car?

Are you engaged with the operation of the machinery or engaged with the higher level task of driving itself?

Does the higher level driving task include feeling what the car is doing at any time?

Discuss 🙂

I “hyper-focus” on things that I’m drawn to (thank you, ADHD) and driving is the best example. Always loved driving and my enjoyment only increased as my dailies got more “engaging.”

One of Mazda’s philosophies is ”jinba ittai,” or, “the oneness of horse and rider.” Corny, I know. But I’d be straight-up lying if I said I don’t relate to that when I’m in the zone.

It’s as though my Miata and I naturally adapt to fit each other — like it’s an extension of myself.

@serichards It's when you get to enjoy interacting with the machine to the point that it's an extension of yourself and the machine doesn't get in the way. The best driving engagement isn't a competent car - many competent cars are incredibly boring because they don't feel engaging - it's a car whose characteristics match the driver's own.

This is it, folks.

Everyone has their preferred level of effort they want to exert while driving.

Ideally you never feel like you need to wrangle your car. At the same time, numbness can be a drag if the driver is looking for some feedback.
