I wonder, how do people manage to preorder figures. Sure, there are sites like AmiAmi that doesn’t have the ability to prepay up at front. Since exchange rates can fluctuate, I would rather pay at front. I have savings to pay up front without getting into massive debt over a hobby. I do track my spending while still contributing to retirement and investing.

However going overboard with not paying preorders can be a dangerous game, especially more so with the Buy Now Pay Later financing, which allows you to split up a purchase into 3-4 payments every two weeks. What is dangerous is that people tend to spend even more, thus get into the debt trap.

I wonder, how to people pay for their anime figure preorders and how people afford to buy releases. To be honest, I haven't been preordering any newest releases lately since not many figures are worth preordering.

@chikorita157
Like the person who made that post, I grew up in a financially save household, never having to think once about how we were gonna afford something.

Unlike the person who seems to be doing fine still, I have run into major debt with the "that's in six/eight/twelve/fifteen months I can afford it then" mindset.

Unfortunately (for me) no one at my bank cares so I pay several hundred euro in overdraft fees every month and will continue to do so until... Idk I'm not good with this stuff

@chikorita157 I’ve also heard about figures getting delayed and people unexpectedly having to pay for multiple figures at once that they couldn’t have accounted for. I thought about preordering figures but I made the decision to just, not. I’ll check them out when they release.

@SweetAmelia I do notice that most figures don't sell out as they use to, I guess the high prices compared to what they used to be years ago are taking a toll. Even back in 2016 when I started ordering a few figures, they weren't as high as they are, although the yen was stronger back then.

Often, you can find releases that are a few years old that are cheaper on the second hand market. Makes you wonder if it's worth preordering, unless you like that figure and have to get it.

@chikorita157 I got a bunch of figures yesterday and the vast majority of them were like $10-30 and I’m very happy with how they are. I did spend more on a select few but definitely makes me think how there’s people spend hundreds of dollars on tons of figures, each figure each, like, is that really necessary? The figure I had to pay the most for was a price figure because it was from a niche anime that came out a decade ago. A few figures were $50 and seemed super nice in my eyes, and one of the like $20 ones easily surpasses one of the $50 too. I guess I also am very much not a collector, I just wanted like some cool room decor of stuff I like (characters, series, anime girls). I feel pretty set now lol. There is a awesome Fischl figure that’s $200 set to come out in December which looks awesome but like if they made a $50 version or even cheaper I’d probably be much happier with that lol, probably will skip the $200 one and hope it happens.

@chikorita157 🤔 but you can always decide not to pay your preorder at amiami, if you think that the exchange rate has become to onerous or for any reason. I see that as an advantage of the preorder now/pay later model

@mofumofu The thing is, the yen is at the weakest in years, and I suspect that it won't stay that way forever. Would rather lock in the weak yen now than wait for the exchange rates to get worse in the future.

Right now, $1 = ¥151.61
