@JeniParsons I really don't understand why WG, NFUC, WFU don't get together to switch Welsh farming away from the post 1960's 'maximise output and reduce quality' approach, back to the regenerative sustainable approach that preceded it. The cheap food subsidies drove the changes then, we could use the same mechanism to reverse it. Oh, and forestry on prime land isn't the answer! But pasture with trees could be part of it. As could improving the wool by breeding, to better suit modern markets.

All those are very sensible points. But (most) farmers run on low cashflow and a small net income, and aren’t in a position to withstand cashflow breaks, or find the capital for investing in changes. The will is there, but the money isn’t.

That will only change with significant directed investment. And why would WGov want to invest in a bunch of Cowbridge tories who heckle Drakeford, suck up to Sunak, and dump chickenshit in the Wye?
