I think I've narrowed down my small backpack search to the Aer Go Pack 2, Aer Pro Pack Slim, and the Fjallraven Ulvo. Any opinions, particularly around how small they pack and how well they protect your laptop, gimme 😛

@christianselig haven't watched it yet, but Pack Hacker just posted a "Top Ten Packable Backpacks” video

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wHnggFcYW-I

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@ct Haha I just watched that over lunch! Great video but I'm looking for ones with a bit more padding for a laptop

@christianselig it’s jumping up a price point, but I’d feel remiss not recommending Tom Bihn here. Their Synapse and Synik backpacks are great, utterly bombproof, and have a lot of useful organization. (Exactly which I’d recommend depends on the size of laptop you’re carrying and exactly how travel-specialized you want it to be.) https://www.tombihn.com/collections/backpacks

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@kemayo Those look really nice but are missing a dedicated/external water bottle holder :(

hiiaminfi,
@hiiaminfi@mastodontech.de avatar

@christianselig not to break your search … but https://horizn-studios.com/us/ has pretty dope backpacks too. (Sorry if that added time to your search)

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@hiiaminfi Those look so nice but I don’t really see any packable ones there that could go inside another backpack

gatewayy,
@gatewayy@mastodon.gatewayy.net avatar

@christianselig the smallest bag I have current is this one: https://www.sfbags.com/collections/bags/products/essential-laptop-backpack. I absolutely love it and use it daily.

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@gatewayy That one's really nice, but doesn't look like it packs that flat does it?

gatewayy,
@gatewayy@mastodon.gatewayy.net avatar

@christianselig No, it is probably not the flattest bag available. I have never bought specifically with flat packing in mind. I was going for protection of my laptop along with weight and efficient use of space when I purchased it.

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@gatewayy Ah yeah looks like a tank for that but I want something minimal for inside my bag

mikaelacaron,
@mikaelacaron@swiftdevs.space avatar

@christianselig I have an Aer Travel Pack 3 and love it!
I just use the built in laptop compartment, no extra case and haven’t had issues

I maybe have a few tiny dings that I have slowly noticed over 3 years…. Haha but that could also be a result of me packing the backpack too full along with that 😅

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@mikaelacaron That's the large bag I want! Just when going to Apple Park and whatnot I want a smaller daypack I can bring that can hopefully fit inside the Travel Pack as it's a bit big

mikaelacaron,
@mikaelacaron@swiftdevs.space avatar

@christianselig I actually have the Travel Pack Small version! Not the bigger (regular version)
And it’s perfect!

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@mikaelacaron Ohhhh, interesting. I think I'd still prefer a tiny daypack just so I can leave all my clothes and nonessentials back at the hotel haha

mikaelacaron,
@mikaelacaron@swiftdevs.space avatar

@christianselig haha I mean I do that, just take clothes and stuff out and then carry it throughout the day with just my laptop in it

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@mikaelacaron Interesting, storing my clothes outside of my bag has always freaked me out but maybe I'm just being dramatic lol

mikaelacaron,
@mikaelacaron@swiftdevs.space avatar

@christianselig hahaha I set them on a table usually!
Lolol if I can’t trust my stuff sitting there, how can I trust the bed 🫨🫨 or the whole place 🫨

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@mikaelacaron Dang you’ve given me a lot to think about lol

MuseumShuffle,
@MuseumShuffle@mastodon.social avatar

@mikaelacaron @christianselig Christian is going to be so jealous when he sees my $20 day pack I’ll have in Apple Park.

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@MuseumShuffle @mikaelacaron Hahah. I've used a grocery bag in a pinch in the past so I feel you, just aiming to up my game a little :p

MuseumShuffle,
@MuseumShuffle@mastodon.social avatar

@christianselig @mikaelacaron lol, I’m actually wearing it in this picture where Christian can hardly contain his excitement

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@MuseumShuffle @mikaelacaron I don’t think I’m even wearing a backpack there so yours is infinitely fancier 🤑

freediverx,
@freediverx@mastodon.social avatar

@christianselig
I'd recommend ordering them all to check them out in person, then return the others.

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@freediverx Harder in Canada unfortunately

@freediverx@mastodon.social avatar

@christianselig
High shipping costs?

jeromechoo,
@jeromechoo@masto.ai avatar

@christianselig I have a Civic Half-zip 22L from Evergoods and it's awesome. Dual water bottle pockets, laptop sleeve, 2 organization pockets.

Packs tight. A full bag packed for a weekend trip will still fit under the seat in an airplane.

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@jeromechoo Dope looking backpack, just a bit hefty for putting in another backpack

@JaymesRS@mastodon.social avatar

@christianselig my only recommendation for the Go Pack 2 is to pick up an add-on sternum straps (something similar to this: https://www.amazon.com/YYST-Sternum-Backpack-Harness-webbing/dp/B07D3RGMNM/). On long days, it helps a lot with comfort, and where it sits on your shoulders.

h_r_w_go,
@h_r_w_go@iosdev.space avatar

@christianselig I have the Ulvo and I really like it. Good laptop sleeve. But the backpack itself won’t pack that small, because it is a little stiff. Right now I use the small Skule, because I wanted to be able to attach my jacket on the outside. Also a good laptop compartment and it packs smaller than the Ulvo. Maybe it is worth looking into as well.

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@h_r_w_go Ooo that's handy to know, thank you!

JaymesRS,
@JaymesRS@mastodon.social avatar

@christianselig I have the Go Pack 2 and love it. I use a Travel Pack 3 going to-from the destination but the Go Pack (or a Pro Sling if I want to be super lightweight) at the destination and it’s nearly perfect. I wanted something with more support but that laid flat for packing and wasn’t just a formless nylon bag.

I don’t put a laptop in it, but do have 11” iPad Pro in it, & it has a suspended pocket that works well for me. I only wish there were more small pockets inside for little things.

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@JaymesRS If you sat it down somewhere with the iPad in the laptop compartment do you have to be super careful or is it not the worst?

JaymesRS,
@JaymesRS@mastodon.social avatar

@christianselig depends a little bit on how hard you set it down and what else is in the bag. The laptop pocket is suspended off the bottom of the bag a few inches and has some thin padding ½”(?) if I recall (I can follow up when I get home if you’d like). If you just drop it off your shoulders, probably not, if you set it down normally, or have a soft sweater/jacket at the bottom you should be fine. Of that style of compact bag, it had the most protection I could find.

JaymesRS,
@JaymesRS@mastodon.social avatar

@christianselig the other 2 bags will probably have more padding, the pro pack slim also has a suspended pocket I think; but they don’t collapse anywhere near as flat because of the additional structure. If it’s your only travel bag, it’s probably not the right choice, if it’s a secondary bag for when you get to your destination that’s where it shines.

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@JaymesRS This has been so helpful, thank you so much!
