There are some good books by people like RA Penfold too.

NE 555 is a timer chip (8 pin) very versitile, LM 386 is audio amp and I think its LM741 which is a comparator.

Happy to try and help further, not sure what level you are at, but I am assuming you are not a total beginner so know what capacitors, resistors etc are.
