    @paulkater The Iron Curtain was still in place, and Ukraine was on the bad side of it. The Soviet totalitarian regime tried to hide the scale of the disaster. On May 1, they even organized a workers' solidarity 'rally' in Kyiv, despite the danger to people's lives. But totalitarian regimes do not take people into account.
