@lucy@realcaseyrollins there’s a mastodon fork that does emoji reactions and doesn’t have a fixed character limit at least; i’d probably choose that over pleroma these days tbqh
@Paulajak@vriska@mia@lucy I actually hate it. Looks like a pseudoretro forum site. At least #Mastodon looks like it was designed with the 2010s and 2020s in mind
@lucy@realcaseyrollins@Paulajak@vriska i don’t really think mastofe is that much worse, and pleroma’s frontends aren’t so much better it offsets its backend problems
then again i’m a misskey fork user and think its frontend is mostly alright too :cirno_shrug:
i think i know why, too. it’s not even the javascript but the very inefficient DOM. there are some things it does that trigger very expensive layout/rendering operations, especially when infinite scroll is enabled
like it doesn’t keep track of the last visible posts to implement that but queries the size of the page container, which causes the browser to refresh the content layout of every element in every post. the result of that also won’t be cached because e.g. CSS animations can change everything
@lucy@vriska@realcaseyrollins@Paulajak foundkey at some point did something that made the entire frontend a lot faster and more efficient but i don’t know what, and none of the other forks have it.
upstream misskey is so bad chromium-based browsers run out of graphics tile memory when there’s a post with a lot of image attachments, for example
