Anyone interested in becoming a legislator should have to spend one year living with different types of people in different socio-economic brackets. Like study abroad at home.

@StillIRise1963 What an absolutely excellent idea! Now that so many legislators (in the US) are wealthy, they've got no clue how ordinary people live. They don't know what it actually feels like but they should.

@isotope239 Nope. They have no idea.

@StillIRise1963 I’d add study abroad abroad back in, and extend this to any politician in any country making decisions that affect the world.

@kate I agree with that too. At home and abroad.

@StillIRise1963 A year or two of mandatory public service for all young people. Like the draft, but a wider range of options. They would jump feet first into living, working, existing with, and perhaps befriending people from vastly different backgrounds.

@JaneinNJ I agree. I’ve thought about the exact same thing. A mandatory two year "peace corps" at home with kids working in different parts of the country to help with climate change or other large projects that help them get to know people in different communities and the problems they face.
