@angiebaby According to 张戎 (Zhang Rong or Chang Jung depending on your romanization scheme of choice), in her book Wild Swans, they were indeed told to eat all their food because "children in capitalist nations are going to bed without food".
This was during the Great Leap Forward, no less, when famine was killing millions in China.
