Having visited four rare book and manuscript reading rooms in the last week, and being mildly admonished in one for bringing in a camera case that fit the camera but was considered technically a bag, the ability of people to steal these books is baffling to me. https://www.nytimes.com/2024/05/01/books/booksupdate/rare-books-pushkin-disappearance.html?unlocked_article_code=1.ok0.tGKz.8EhCFIXJJIf6&smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare&sgrp=c-cb

When I left one room, I was politely asked to open the cover of my iPad to ensure no papers were inside.

@glennf And terrifying to me.

@overholt I mean, determined thieves can do a lot, and not every library is aware of the value of every old volume in their stacks. Particularly in foreign languages and from the 1800s. But this seems like they have either unsecured or naive access rules.
