i’m about to buy a perfect white dress and dye it myself. please talk me off this particular ledge.

@lzg I mean, the ledge is fine, but if you have like a slop sink or something you're not afraid of staining I would recommend using that

the original problem is i need a semi-formal dress in a natural fiber (hot, humid place) but it has to be in a very specific color palette that is sadly not in stores this season, and not a normal one in my closet.

i could also make a dress, but just getting the fabric starts being more expensive than what i intended to spend, nevermind the hours of suffering

@lzg What’s your timeline?

lzg,
@lzg@mastodon.social avatar

@brennx0r about a month

brennx0r,
@brennx0r@mastodon.social avatar

@lzg Oof, yeah, that’s cutting it a bit close on making something :(

brennx0r,
@brennx0r@mastodon.social avatar

@lzg I wonder if a place like Rent the Runway might have what you’re looking for. Not a member, but I figure they would have a filter based on fabrics.

@brennx0r oh yeah i love RtR, have got very nice dressed from them! but i wouldn’t be able to reach a return spot in time (im staying in CR for a few weeks after the wedding)

@lzg What fabric? That will influence how easy it is to dye a satisfactory shade at home.

lzg,
@lzg@mastodon.social avatar

@fifilamoura it’s going to be cotton or linen but i’m worried about nylon thread, zippers, elastics etc

brennx0r,
@brennx0r@mastodon.social avatar

@lzg @fifilamoura 💯, would be concerned about these things too. Had a dye adventure go wrong for this reason.

@lzg when I considered this, I learned different fabric takes color differently. so if it's a blend, it may get spotty. the stitching may not take color in the same way as the rest of the dress.
i still think it'd be a cool experiment though

@paulathevalley yeah that’s my fear, even if the fabric is all cotton the sewing thread and zippers are usually nylon. it has to be a very particular dress!
