@fifilamoura@eldritch.cafe

I write and think about culture (for fun and to pay my rent). My obsessive interest is people and how we work, individually and collectively, which makes me interested in most things, with a particularly keen interest in cogsci and psychology (I grew up around medical science). I studied painting and drawing at uni and I used to play in bands and work in the music industry. Maybe I'll switch to using my real name here eventually.

So RFK's brainworm story was just a ruse to get out of paying alimony, which is why we know about it. Figures. What an absolute asshole he is.

What are the chances that RFK, Jr.'s brain was eaten by a worm at the same time he got mercury poisoning AND was going through a contentious divorce in which he testified that his cognitive problems impacted his ability to pay spousal support? https://skepchick.org/2024/05/did-a-worm-really-eat-rfk-jr-s-brain/

Everything about Durov's statement is so profoundly dishonest that I feel like engaging in a point-by-point debunking is a waste of time. If most of the messages on your platform are not end-to-end encrypted AT ALL, it is less private and secure than platforms whose messages are all e2e by default.

This is what happens when you run anything, including universities, as for-profit businesses rather than what they are and should be.

"It's a cash cow," said Richard Kurland, an immigration lawyer and policy analyst in Vancouver. "Each student likely generates at least $20,000 for an educational institution, and we're talking about thousands and thousands of students."

@fifilamoura@eldritch.cafe avatar

@Greengordon I've never even heard of any of these universities (or are they sort of colleges or trade schools of some type?) or are they branches of more well known universities?
*I looked up the biggest one and it seems they're more like trade schools and not actually universities.

fifilamoura,
@fifilamoura@eldritch.cafe avatar

@msquebanh It's quite disturbing that this story keeps getting reported as "universities" when it's actually various kinds of tech and trade schools that aren't universities at all. I'm not surprised that they're schools that aren't recognized by other schools! @Greengordon

Watching the bear vs man in forest stories & I remember when our 9-year-old son said some boys at recess offered to play with him if 'he hugged & kissed a girl.'

He replied, "No, that's inappropriate," & told us he didn't mind not being able to play with those boys after all. Later his teacher shared she was happy he stood up to peer pressure.

Y'all—it's never too early to teach boys about consent & boundaries. Have the convo. Then again. And again. Boys will be the boys we teach them to be.

Today is the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ Peoples, also known as Red Dress Day. The name comes from the REDress project created by Métis artist Jamie Black in 2010. As part of an art installation, Jamie hung hundreds of empty red dresses in public spaces to remind people of the First Nations, Métis, and Inuit women and girls lost to gender-based violence.
"Redress” means to remedy or set right. The REDdress project is a call to action. Though these conversations can be challenging with learners, it’s important to make them aware of this ongoing issue and discuss how they can take action.

@aral 100% this. I find it so weird that people treat it like some binary game. I'm sick of repeating that if I have to be on a team, it's team humanity and nature (war doesn't just destroy humans and grease intergenerational cycles of violence and trauma, it also poisons ecosystems for generations as well....).

“Biden broke his silence on the demonstrations on Thursday after the UCLA raid, saying Americans have the right to protest but not to unleash violence.

‘Destroying property is not a peaceful protest,’ he said at the White House. ‘It’s against the law. Vandalism, trespassing, breaking windows, shutting down campuses, forcing the canceling of classes and graduations — none of this is a peaceful protest.’

The obviously bullshit turns out to, obviously, be bullshit. Carbon capture was always a fantasy promoted by the coal and gas industry to prevent real action to protect the climate.

"A signature carbon capture and storage project in Saskatchewan continues to miss emissions reduction goals, raising questions about the cost-effectiveness of the technology, says a report.

"We don't think carbon capture works as well as industry and promoters claim," said David Schissel, an analyst who wrote the report for the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis, an international non-profit agency.

"We don't think it's a good use of money to keep coal-fired power plants running."

What people forget about Luddites isn’t that they protest technology, it’s that they were protesting factory owners who used technology to create shoddy products while oppressing labor.

Editing to say: Whenever I hear someone say Luddites in a derogatory way, especially about , I try to offer them links about this and am surprised when some people still take an anti-Luddites stance

fifilamoura,
@fifilamoura@eldritch.cafe avatar

@skinnylatte what the people behind AI don't seem to understand is that the physical process of creating is an integral part of creation and shapes the art we make and our end result, by intent and very importantly by accident--it's a material process as well as an abstract one (having the idea). Most makers understand this but AI is based on thinking about art as product/widgets (and not in a self aware Warhol way) because the people making it are factory owners not weavers.
