I'm honestly annoyed with PC gamers' response to Helldivers 2 requiring PSN accounts.

Refunding a game you've played for >200hrs because you have to make a new account? It's so childish.

If you're worried about a data breach or something, do what most security-conscious people do: use a unique username/password.

If you're in one of the few countries where PSN isn't an option you have a legit argument once they actually lock you out but the devs already say they're working on that problem.

If you're getting btfo because Sony wants your gameplay data, I have no sympathy.

I have plenty of issues with Sony. This ain't one of them

@neatchee Gameplay data? As in statistics on what people do or don’t do in games? Just trying to figure out what you meant by it.

I don’t think statistics is inherently bad, and I’m not surprised if company A knows I bought product B from them.

The scary part is when they start tracking important things on individuals. Anyone that can pull out health, religion, race, sex, gender, etc on individuals is a huge issue.

@yon Yeah I'm just talking about what you did in the game and worst case scenario things you discussed in chat. This is Sony, so we're talking about metrics they can monetize through marketing, or deciding what games to make and how to make them

As someone who's seen behind that particular curtain, it's legitimately the least sensitive stuff you could imagine. "How many hours does the average player spend in X vs Y activities" or "can we identify signs that a player is going to stop playing the game soon".

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@neatchee Yeah I was guessing it was something like that. It’s going to be “Yon plays a game in genre a, let’s push another game in genre a” after all.

I mean it doesn’t even remotely work on me, but the in game metrics to improve things would be nice, or what type of games people like.

That said, if I was in charge of the giants like Nintendo, Sony, or XBox I’d run a bunch one 5-20 people studios whose sole job it is to make one game a year. Small Indy styles. To find new genres.

Having more accounts is a pita, but this ain’t the worst I’ve seen. At least it’s not a Bethesda account when you are on XBox (that’s where you should save, merge all accounts into one and have those people work on something better).

neatchee,
@neatchee@urusai.social avatar

@yon Exactly. Annoying? Maybe. Justification to demand a refund after sinking 200+ hours into a game? Absolutely not.

People really out there thinking corps care about them individually when the reality is they just want metrics. They want to make data-driven decisions about how to make and sell games. That's it.

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@neatchee Thinking more in general. Ending up with a lot more accounts than I can manage really. Everything wants a dang account:/

I’d say some companies just want the statistics, but others very clearly want to hone in on individuals. Sadly any tries to stop it is just cost of doing business:(

But the general anger around a game isn’t proportional. It’s a “swear a bit by yourself” thing, not an act out one. It’s not SCOTUS taking away human rights. It’s a game.

(And I’m saying that as a gamer that seriously don’t want to loose saves and such things.)

neatchee,
@neatchee@urusai.social avatar

@yon that's how I feel about it as well. There are so many things that need our outrage and being outraged at everything is tiring and makes people numb to it

As for too many accounts... Yeah, I run my own password management server and it's crazy how many there are in the list lol

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@neatchee One of the reasons why I think accounts should be separate for the fediverse. Would be nice to be able to use one sign in for multiple servers and types of servers and have multiple identities with that.

Imho.

(Also a serious, and sad thought. If a single game is your whole identity, you are addicted and it could affect your life.)

neatchee,
@neatchee@urusai.social avatar

@yon there is definitely a fine line between fandom and addiction. At various times in my life I've been very attached to different games as part of my identity but never to the point that I felt rage towards the creators

Interestingly, Mastodon and many other fediverse apps can be used as SSO for other services, they just don't support creating accounts that way which is a shame. Pixelfed enabled sign-in via Mastodon account not long ago and I was hoping it would catch on but doesn't seem to be

@cthellis@urusai.social avatar

@neatchee Yeah, it’s very odd. Especially since the PSN tie was announced from the beginning and highly encouraged, just not 100% enforced. Pretty sure non-PSN regions can just use any old nearby one. You don’t have to register any personal information or credit card to it if you don’t want.

Annoying, but so many games want account ties even if they don’t need it. Just part of modern gaming obnoxiousness. Not worth all the RAAAAAGE abouts.

@neatchee Won't somebody think of the outrage?!

@neatchee Lol, I seem to have upset some Nazis with this, oh no.

@d were there replies I can't see? Or did I already suspend their servers? XD

d,

@neatchee The latter, I would guess (Detroit Riot peeps.)

neatchee,
@neatchee@urusai.social avatar

@d oh wait I always forget I won't see replies if we don't already pick up those users for another reason. I have to load them from your server

@padraig @neatchee to be fair here, I actually discovered today whilst discussing exactly this that on the US PlayStation store, you can purchase a Steam code directly from Sony without ever going to the Steam page or creating a Sony account (it just asks for an email address).
Nowhere on that page does it actually mention that you will need a Sony account, either (rather, it specifically says that you "currently do not" need to do so, with no indication that they intended to change that).

I think that's a fair situation to be complaining about, since you can give them money without ever being told they planned to do this?

neatchee,
@neatchee@urusai.social avatar

@lyrenhex @padraig Sure, that one makes sense. And in that scenario you would go to PSN for a refund since they're selling you a code and Steam will never, ever issue refunds for codes.

I still think it's petty and silly but at least then you've got a reasonable argument
