In cosmic horror stories, which world is more real: the mundane world the character has lived in their entire life up til that point, or the new world discovered beyond the veil?

@eniko oh I voted wrong, the new world should be more real. I took issue with the worlds being described as seperate, as what I regard as good cosmic horror tends to treat the mundane as a veil behind which is hidden an abundance of sublime horrors. Where it is the pursuit of objective knowledge that leads one to corners of their own world that should have been left unseen.

(edit) in fact I don't think thinking about cosmic horror in terms of real and unreal is that useful. Rather I would focus on the Phenomenal/Noumenal distinction.

@eniko

When you've pierced the veil, the real world is revealed to be the "real" world. The world beyond the veil isn't real... it is more than real... so I can't call it real from my perspective on this side of the veil but neither could I do so from the other.

@SinbadEV i mean if the new world is hyper-real wouldn't that make it more real than the "real" world?

@eniko our answer to this became a lot clearer in light of Katalepesis. if you'd asked a few years ago we'd have had to think about it pretty hard.

@irenes oh?

@eniko how sure are we that the new world isn't a product of the character's brain going doolally?

@MachineLordZero assume it's not
