Every once in a while I am amazed that one of the contenders for social media dominance right now is literally named "blue sky"

It's a term from project planning, and I'm pretty sure it's intended to mean "what you do if there were no constraints"

1/2

irenes,
@irenes@mastodon.social avatar

@xgranade @trochee sigh it's the ideological component

irenes,
@irenes@mastodon.social avatar

@xgranade @timethief @trochee that sounds right

irenes,
@irenes@mastodon.social avatar

@xgranade @timethief @trochee or we might more precisely say a form of power - structure is about how it's structured, which is not always the same and there's more to say about it

irenes,
@irenes@mastodon.social avatar

@xgranade @timethief @trochee no worries, we're just always trying to be as precise as we can with this stuff :)

In cosmic horror stories, which world is more real: the mundane world the character has lived in their entire life up til that point, or the new world discovered beyond the veil?

irenes,
@irenes@mastodon.social avatar

@eniko our answer to this became a lot clearer in light of Katalepesis. if you'd asked a few years ago we'd have had to think about it pretty hard.

Pondering the parallels between the Christian myth of Adam and Eve approaching a tree with a snake in it and attaining knowledge of good and evil, with the snake and the gained knowledge seen as evil; and the Buddhist myth (new to me) of Mucalinda, meaning the Buddha also sat under a tree with a snake and there also attained enlightenment but here the knowledge so gained is good and the snake is seen as a protector

Could invent some really fun heresies by developing this line of thought further

irenes,
@irenes@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc yes, it's incredibly annoying

"generation" narratives and labels mostly wind up dividing us when we would be better off united.

this is one of those few opinions we have that's really classifiable as a hot take... anyway, yeah

some things ARE coincidences. life is not a Hollywood movie, things can happen without there being story logic behind them.

Product design poll - please share.

When you write or otherwise work at your desktop computer for any length of time, are you prone to experiencing back or neck pain bad enough that you’d consider a $100+ apparatus that minimizes or eliminates the pain, even when used continously throughout the day?

irenes,
@irenes@mastodon.social avatar

@shoq we'd strongly consider anything of that nature - but it's a fairly high bar to convince us a product is going to help

many of you have seen me speak out against Thiel companies participating in Rust and NixOS development, but I don't think I ever clearly said why

as anyone who has opened and read my bio will know, I'm fine with the existence and use of weapons. no, what I have the problem with is imperialism; and Palantir and Andruil, and their acceptance, is currently the means by which it's capturing our communities

irenes,
@irenes@mastodon.social avatar

@danderson @whitequark the thing to keep in mind is that the performance of surprise is, itself, a weapon in situations like this. we're under no illusion personally that it's universally sincere.

If you've ever found yourself missing the "good old days" of the , what is it that you miss? (Interpret "it" broadly: specific websites? types of activities? feelings? etc.) And approximately when were those good old days?

No wrong answers — I'm working on an article and wanted to get some outside thoughts.

irenes,
@irenes@mastodon.social avatar

@molly0xfff most of the sites we visited were run by individual people whose personality was all over them

a few really BIG ones were run by groups of like five volunteers, in aggressively counter-hierarchical ways

irenes,
@irenes@mastodon.social avatar

@molly0xfff we will say that what we miss about the 1990s internet was as much Usenet and mailing-list culture as it was "the web"

that weird libertarian text editing app whose name escapes me and had ugly design

we would like it very much if GNU less would stop adding features. it seems to have added some sort of interactive JSON formatting at some point? which makes it possible to get into a mode where it's streaming the output from a subprocess it created, and is unwilling to quit until that finishes?

Everyone is talking about fast fashion, but no one is talking about the plague of fast furniture. It’s impossible to find true durable pieces that can last for generations anymore, even the so-called “Amish made” pieces are typically cheap stuff being bulk produced in one of a dozen massive factories.

I can’t even find a solid wood panel bed at any of the vintage or resale shops anymore. Particleboard is the only choice we’re being given. It’s tragic.

irenes,
@irenes@mastodon.social avatar

@krusynth no, yeah, it's really bad

we've looked pretty hard and have been able to find stuff so far, but it's pricey and definitely makes us aware of our privilege

irenes,
@irenes@mastodon.social avatar

@Di4na @krusynth shit, wow. that's sobering.

irenes,
@irenes@mastodon.social avatar

@Di4na @krusynth did the price of wood go up in recent years, or is it more a matter of inflation not specific to furniture?

What's the most unusual place you've ever coded from? 🤔

irenes,
@irenes@mastodon.social avatar

@nixCraft one time as kids, separated from our computer for a weekend and before the advent of smartphones, we attempted to write machine code on paper to be directly input on our calculator via a hex editor

an early attempt instead crashed the calculator, which erased the hex editor, so we weren't able to continue. ah well. it was a fun diversion

If you criticize me for going out to empty places sitting by open windows with my CO2 monitor showing safe air during the lowest point of infections in eight months, I'm happy to block you. The vast majority of people are simply completely ignoring COVID-19. I'm not. But I think people have a right to make informed decisions to minimize risk while living life. If you accept the risk of driving in a car, don't bash others for making informed decisions to enjoy life. Life is balance.

Something I've been noticing about search engines (well, google) recently is how bad they are at respecting word order in cases where it matters. Like, you search "convert x to y" and they match "convert y to x". Or this morning I'm searching "inset diamond in square equation" and i am indeed finding overwhelmingly things that contain both the words "diamond" and "equation", such as the "diamond method" for quadratics. But nothing related to insetting diamonds in squares.

irenes,
@irenes@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc no, yeah, it goes back to the "neat" vs. "scruffy" thing, which was pre-AI-winter terminology about approaches that can, in principle, be understood by humans vs. approaches that can't (that's our very loose attempt to summarize the intuition, we're not aware of a widely-known explanation)

@foone however, we recommend against making a physically accurate raytracer for sunsets

we tried to do that one weekend

the primary thing we learned was not to try to make a physically accurate raytracer for sunsets
