Want to come with me to the museum of East-Asian art in Cologne?

Just look at this wine vessel! Bronze, Chinese, 12-13 century BC - but also, how cute is it? 🦉

Japanese, Meiji-Period (1868-1912), replica of another sculpture from the 12the century.

It's always fascinating to me how different the pictorial language is (and how little we intuitively understand how much e.g. anime are drawing from a rich cultural pictorial background that we neither know nor understand in Europe).

Fuji, 17th century.

The simplicity and the perfection of this. Just ... <3

This was a large modern artwork by Morita Shiryū. I do not speak or read Japanese, but this one was deeply touching, I spend some time sitting in front of it, contemplating.

Shunga prints are always fun.

But I had no idea they were used against demons who were thought to fear the sight of sexual intercourse ...

And last but not least, I have this eternal fascination with things that look modern but are old - this jug is something I'd love to be a part of my everyday ceramics collections. Of course, it will never be and should not be, given how it's from the 8. or 9. century ...

@vicgrinberg Demons were like “Oh nooooo, not another horny paintings. Our only weakness. I sure hope they’ll stop hanging them around 😏.”.

vicgrinberg,
@vicgrinberg@mastodon.social avatar

@Sylvhem Yeah 😅 I also low how different this is with how sexuality and demonic powers are otherwise connected ...

Sylvhem,
@Sylvhem@eldritch.cafe avatar

@vicgrinberg Me too! The perspective is completely unlike the Christian one.

@vicgrinberg This is stunning! I’m in Cologne next month so I’m adding this place to my visit list, thanks for the tip ☺️

vicgrinberg,
@vicgrinberg@mastodon.social avatar

@LDJ aww, enjoy! The museum is overall a bit dated (they really could contexttualize things a bit more), but it's still very much worth visiting! They should also have a really nice special exhibition by then for which I was a few days too early ...

@vicgrinberg I am extremely proud of myself that as soon as I saw that I thought “Song Dynasty!”

@Lyle ooooh, nice! I don't know my way around Chinese art objects enough for that (I may be able to tell ukiyo-e artists apart, but also that not always) 😅
