Autocratic regimes are finding that instead of further repressing their own populations, it's easier to sow disinformation, distrust and dissent to poison liberal democracies, where there are plenty of those willing to profit from spreading their propaganda, and lack of those ready to fight against it.

The Kremlin’s friends include E.U. leaders, despots in the Global South, and prominent members of the American right. They all share an aversion to the West’s perceived liberal establishment, and see a positive vision in Putin’s rejection of it."
