Trying to build a system to scaffold your brain is such a tricky business, because you have to balance the tools available, how you want things to work, and openness to ways that might work better.

This post brought to you by me trying to use Obsidian and so much feeling not-quite-but-almost.

I think I want something like an outliner where I can "star" items I'm ready to tackle, and all starred items appear in another view, a today agenda, where I can freely drag and drop items to reorder them, according to the order they make sense to tackle that day. And it all syncs between Mac and iPhone.

Things for Mac and iPhone has been working nicely for me at the second part of that, but fails for me at the planning part, where I'd really like an outliner.

@misc this is basically what Things does, and i’ve been using it for over a decade to great effect. you don’t exactly “star” items, but you can mark them as “today” and freely rearrange them on all platforms except apple watch. even supports multi-select, which is older and in my opinion better than apple’s iOS implementation!

@exchgr lol jinx - yeah I've been using it but I don't like how it does subtasks. Need something much more freeform for planning projects, like an outliner.

@misc oo yeah i see that now. yeah sometimes the levels of project, header-within-project, and sub-task aren’t enough lol

@exchgr Unfortunately it's spoiled me with how well it does what it does well! I'm afraid every makeshift solution I come up with is gonna feel horribly janky by comparison.

@misc That's exactly how many people use OmniFocus. You can build an outline of tasks, flag the ones you want to do today, switch to today's Forecast and see them organized there. (In Forecast you can rearrange their order, and choose whether to preserve their original hierarchy or not.)

@kcase Interesting! Time to give it another whirl. I think I last tried it in v1, and tbh felt a little overwhelmed, both on functionality and price… but I am staff at an educational institution so at least the latter problem might be manageable. And OmniOutliner was my first love in the outliner space…

@misc It has a two-week free trial, so you can give it a whirl and see whether it meets your needs without having to pay for anything.

Afterwards, if you choose to purchase, be sure to purchase from our edu store to get the edu discount. A single one-time purchase of $45 will license the app across all native platforms: Mac, iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and Apple Vision Pro.
