The Lidl Wiesbaden does not have wild garlic. This seems to be totally a Southern German thing (yes, if they had it I would have brought it all the way from Wiesbaden to Leiden, I even had an extra bag packed to transport it safely) 😭😭😭😭

Noch ein Jahr ohne Bärlauch 💔

@vicgrinberg wild garlic shouldn’t be that hard to get in Leiden? It’s called “daslook” in Dutch.

@rieder I know what it's called but no single store I know has it and I've never seen it at the market (and this is my fifth wild garlic season in Leiden).

If you remember somewhere that I had, I'd be very glad to got and look!

@vicgrinberg I just remember it as quite a common thing, so I’m surprised to hear it’s not.
I don’t know what physical store would have it, I think biological shops might, but I found a few online shops that sell it at least.
Also, intratuin sells the plants, if you have a garden you could grow your own :).

@rieder I've been to Europlaza and a few local greengrocers to no avail - clearly, I'm doing something wrong :( And alas, no garden.

I'd be thankful if you can point me towards a good place to order online (where one does not end up with 10 euro for a sad bunch).

@vicgrinberg apparently, the best tip is to go to a forest and pick some yourself: https://kro-ncrv.nl/programmas/binnenstebuiten/daslook-recepten-vindplaats

https://groentebroer.nl seems to have it (not cheap but not €10). But now I’m interested so I’ll search more tomorrow.

@rieder yeah, the groenteboer is the one I found - with the delivery, we are at 10 Euros.

I was kinda hoping that you knew from your comments from personal experience. Not to be impolite, but I can google ;)

I don't want to forage (some danger of picking up wrong stuff I definitely do no want to pick!) tbh.

@vicgrinberg both more than fair.
I am surprised how hard it is to find the fresh consumption-ready thing. Dried leaves, easier. Plants/bulbs, also easy. Maybe that’s why I remember it as being common. But I’ll keep my eyes open in stores.

vicgrinberg,
@vicgrinberg@mastodon.social avatar

@rieder definitely let me know if you find it! 😊
And it also surprises me how common it is as addition to cheese or similar vs. how hard it is to find...

@vicgrinberg oh no! Bad Wiesbadeners not having any!

(I'm just on the other side of the Rhine and there's a lot to be had here. So not really a Southern German only thing)

vicgrinberg,
@vicgrinberg@mastodon.social avatar

@quidcumque good to know! I may try another shop if I have time tomorrow then! (Out of five different supermarkets close to where partner lives, Lidl is the one with the best and steadiest supply, so it was the first I tried here...)

@vicgrinberg @quidcumque In case it's any help, there is a farmers' market at Dernsches Gelände in the Wiesbaden city center on Wednesday mornings until 1 or 2 o'clock, if I remember correctly. During my time in Mainz a few years ago, it was a good source of local foodstuffs that were difficult to get in supermarkets.

vicgrinberg,
@vicgrinberg@mastodon.social avatar

@corinnaehlers Oooh, good to know! Thank you! My talk is unfortunately 11:45 to 12:45, but I may try to get there before if the time allows. It's some 15 min walk from the hotel...

@vicgrinberg maybe itvis already too late for white garlic this year. We ate the first one in march.

vicgrinberg,
@vicgrinberg@mastodon.social avatar

@jojo_en_riant hmmmm, possible. But I've been to Southern Germany late May last year and could get some... (my photos say the first I had it last year was May 15 and I definitely bought it a few more times after that.)

annemartine,
@annemartine@mastodon.social avatar

@vicgrinberg @jojo_en_riant Because I don't want to forage it in the wild, I'm planning to plant it in my garden. Might take a few years for a decent harvest. In the meantime a friend of a friend has a lot in her garden so I was gifted some lovely wild garlic pesto.

@vicgrinberg@mastodon.social avatar

@annemartine @jojo_en_riant I hope this works! (I also don't want to forage but unfortunately also don't have a garden ...)
