it has gotten to the point where I'm having to send this to JLC's engineers because after FOUR STRAIGHT DAYS of explaining to them that they must not attach edge rails to the end of the edge connector, they said ok, then sent me a review file where they did it anyway.

polpo,
@polpo@bitbang.social avatar

@gsuberland I’ve been adding my own edge rails because I can’t trust JLC to not put them on edge connectors.

gsuberland,
@gsuberland@chaos.social avatar

@polpo yeah lesson learned I guess >_<

polpo,
@polpo@bitbang.social avatar

@gsuberland I thought I was being kinda paranoid about it but after seeing your saga and what they did to some of FreddyV's picomem boards (pic attached) I'm glad I've done it

gsuberland,
@gsuberland@chaos.social avatar

@polpo oh for shit's sake lol

jpm,
@jpm@aus.social avatar

@gsuberland … why does that connector look very much like a SFP (it’s not though)?

gsuberland,
@gsuberland@chaos.social avatar

@jpm

>_>

<_<

jpm,
@jpm@aus.social avatar

@gsuberland … waitaminute, where’s that SFP footprint I made a while ago when I was thinking about putting an entire RasPi-class ARM machine inside a SFP

gsuberland,
@gsuberland@chaos.social avatar

at this rate I'm gonna have to just say fuck it and tell them to make it this way, then file the ends of 100 boards

leo,
@leo@60228.dev avatar

@gsuberland would doing the panelization yourself be less work? or is there a different problem with that

gsuberland,
@gsuberland@chaos.social avatar

@leo I'd have to pay for V-scoring and panel removal then, which gets pricey. when you just let them do it for assembly they do the V-scoring for free, idk why.

otherwise I'd have to use perforations and manually depanel 100 boards myself. and I want good clean edges.

gsuberland,
@gsuberland@chaos.social avatar

@leo plus I wasn't expecting to have this be a pain in the ass, and I put in the order along with other stuff and don't wanna mess with it now. grrrr

gsuberland,
@gsuberland@chaos.social avatar

holy shit I think they may have actually understood this time. gonna wait for board files to review, fingers crossed.

gsuberland,
@gsuberland@chaos.social avatar

they haven't given me any technical info on what the problem is but by pure random inference I think their v-scoring machine can only do a single line, not skip areas, so to attach the rails to the further back positions would mean they can't v-score. they've said they'll need to "be adding stamp holes" which I think means perforation for breaking those parts away during depaneling. which is fine as long as they're in the right place.

gsuberland,
@gsuberland@chaos.social avatar

holy shit I think they got it right. need to double check the production files but I'm fairly certain it's good now.

gsuberland,
@gsuberland@chaos.social avatar

YEEESSSSS THEY GOT IT RIGHT FINALLY

ppxl,
@ppxl@social.tchncs.de avatar

@gsuberland congratulations 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
But how many mental years did it cost?

gsuberland,
@gsuberland@chaos.social avatar

@ppxl far too many.

gsuberland,
@gsuberland@chaos.social avatar

hilariously their solution was to just... not attach that side to the rails.

which is what I asked for in the first place.
