This is a big reason I find demands that users upgrade to the latest release to be unrealistic, and why companies need to support more versions than “latest minus one” or “current release minus 6 months” or whatever.

Reminds me of current problems with Sonos or Tandem.

@aardrian Your post finds me the same day I discover my perfectly capable Mac Mini Plex server is bricked because Plex auto-updated me to a version the Mini can't run while Apple won't allow me to update the OS.

@tbaxter Welcome to the ongoing awful state of software! I assume this is not your first time here… this week.

@aardrian

The planned obsolescence by software upgrade needs to stop. This is the kind of issue the EU should be legislating, instead of pointless cookie banners and USB C cords…

@Myndex @aardrian I'm sorry, I understand your users needs being a blind screen reader user myself, but it's just not how programming and viability works. Being a software engineer, I can tell you that it's beyond frustrating and burnout-prone to work constantly on something old without any possibilities to implement new features. And if we support a zillion older versions, we don't have time to progress. And also, USB-C standardization is one of the most important steps in modern technology. Need to have Mini-USB, Micro-USB, Lightning, USB type B and some proprietary cables really drives me nuts.

@menelion
I agree that’s not how modern programming works. But that is a decision, not inevitable.

If companies had better dev and testing processes, then needing to support older versions would be moot.

For example, this software never should have been deployed, and with no way for users to roll it back, there is a far greater burden on users than devs:

I will be on board with no support for old versions when new versions don’t harm.

@aardrian @menelion @Myndex Sonos has even done this before with s1 and s2 software! They could have just released it as an optional third app until all the problems were worked out as best as possible! This did not need to happen!
