The latest bit of chineseum to cross my path.

Those familiar with the UK plug will see the problem..

@tony is it even possible to physically insert this into the socket?

tony,
@tony@hoyle.me.uk avatar

@lw No.. well not without ramming something into the earth hole.

@tony There's a wall socket in my local pub with a broken pin stuck in the ground hole, preventing anything from being plugged in. This would come in handy there.

@tony Can't possibly be legal in the UK even if it fits the socket. The rest of the world don't care too much about earthing and polarity do they?

@TimWardCam Without an earth pin you're going to have some difficulty getting it in the socket.. maybe jam a screwdriver in :p

These 2 pin adapters have never cared about polarity, or fuses for that matter..

@penguin42@mastodon.org.uk avatar

@tony wth did you find that?

tony,
@tony@hoyle.me.uk avatar

@penguin42 It came with a PSU. Cheaper than the usual adapter I guess.

Being functionally useless is a bit of a downside..

penguin42,
@penguin42@mastodon.org.uk avatar

@tony Do you think it would be better to send it to trading standards or Big Clive?

tony,
@tony@hoyle.me.uk avatar

@penguin42 Clive might have more fun with it..

@tony @penguin42

unless the PSU had something with a plastic earth pin, its bizzare anyone made this in the first place - the UK plug should be familiar to many engineers in China as its widely used in Hong Kong..

tony,
@tony@hoyle.me.uk avatar

@vfrmedia @penguin42 Clearly nothing earth related even as a separate 'stick this in the earth'.

It's fairly hollow inside and obviously not fused.

@vfrmedia @tony @penguin42 is the third pin needed to unlock the other two holes?

tony,
@tony@hoyle.me.uk avatar

@piggo @penguin42 @vfrmedia Yes, it won't work without shenanigans.

@penguin42 @tony coincidentally I spotted this last week - odd shutters which looks like they might permit opening with just live and neutral pins. Some googling suggests amendment 5 to BS1363?

penguin42,
@penguin42@mastodon.org.uk avatar

@jmacarthur @tony MK sound like they've done something odd; but they're saying it still needs all pins; 'Our 13A sockets have a 3-pin, child resistant shutter system, which is designed to inhibit access to electricity, unless all 3 pins of a standard British 13A plug are in position'
