This rings so true for me. I never got math the way it was taught, since it was "principle first, then examples", whereas I always generalise from concrete examples. I'm great at finding patterns.

In fact, I build software bottom-up too. I've always struggled to do plans and outlines.

Wow.

That is exactly why I failed my PhD thesis.

I had mountains of data and no good way to analyze it. My prof expected me to use a theory - but my data didn't fit any of the theories at that time. And I didn't know enough to come up with a new hypothesis.

Finally, he ghosted me and I gave up.
