What makes going out to eat in the U.S. much less fun is the fact that your time is limited. The table has to turn over to someone else after the allotted time and I hate it. I don’t appreciate people telling me I have to go.

@StillIRise1963

I'm sorry, what? I didn't know that! So if I go out to eat in the US and order something in a restaurant, I only have a certain amount of time to enjoy it? Really stupid! Maybe they should screw a parking meter to the table so you can extend it.

Yeah, this is a very impersonal norm. Nothing about it says: welcome. And when they say welcome they mean: come in quickly and give us your money, then leave.

I'd love to just sit and relax. I guess there's a war on these two things, if you think about it.

StillIRise1963,
@StillIRise1963@mastodon.world avatar

@rythur I get that it’s hard to pay the rent, pay the bills and turnover is necessary, but like you said, it’s not very hospitable.

@StillIRise1963 Is this what it's like now?

(I haven't been to a sit down place since the Pandemic since I am high risk...)

StillIRise1963,
@StillIRise1963@mastodon.world avatar

@Aviva_Gary It was always that way where I live. I went to lunch in MA last summer. It was inside (which I really didn’t want to do, but I caved to peer pressure) and they told us to hurry up and finish before the next seating.

@Aviva_Gary I said nothing because I hadn’t seen this friend in a million years and didn’t want to make a scene, but wtf. I gulped down the coffee I was drinking with dessert and payed the bill.🙄

@StillIRise1963

We don't have this as much because we don't go to crowded places and usually only late. We're usually getting kicked out because they're closing. No late hours it the problem for us.

StillIRise1963,
@StillIRise1963@mastodon.world avatar

@billyjoebowers Makes sense and good plan. If I ever go out again here, I’ll do it late.

billyjoebowers,
@billyjoebowers@mastodon.online avatar

@StillIRise1963

It's just the way we do, and every once in a while we go early and I'm always shocked because I forget it's going to be crowded.

StillIRise1963,
@StillIRise1963@mastodon.world avatar

@billyjoebowers Tbh, I haven’t gone to dinner in this country since Covid. When I’m away, I can eat outside, so I’m good and can stay at the table as long as I feel like it. I’ll also keep ordering shit of some sort as long as I sit there.

billyjoebowers,
@billyjoebowers@mastodon.online avatar

@StillIRise1963

Yeah, I've eaten inside twice in 4 years, in diners in the middle of the night when we were the only people there, but still probably shouldn't have.

Luckily there are a fair number of places to eat outside here.

StillIRise1963,
@StillIRise1963@mastodon.world avatar

@billyjoebowers I’m not in a good eat outside place. They exist, but in an unnatural way.

A surprising exception to this is the original Juniors in downtown Brooklyn. They let you sit and sit and they keep filling your water glasses and coffee cups.

StillIRise1963,
@StillIRise1963@mastodon.world avatar

@danblondell Nice! I didn’t know that. The only place I knew where I could do that was The Hungarian Cafe on Amsterdam between 110 & 111.

@StillIRise1963
Rare gems, places like this.

StillIRise1963,
@StillIRise1963@mastodon.world avatar

@danblondell Absolutely and so welcome. You also used to be able to do that at the Dublin House - a pub on the UWS too.

danblondell,
@danblondell@masto.nyc avatar

@StillIRise1963
From what I’ve heard, the UWS used to be pretty chock full of places like this.

Cafe Lalo was like this years ago, but I don’t know how anything in Manhattan is anymore.

@StillIRise1963@mastodon.world avatar

@danblondell It did have a decent number years ago, but I saw most of it change. Now, it’s been a bit, so I don’t know.

QuietLurker,

@StillIRise1963 This is why I was confused the first time I went to Europe as an adult. I was like, why aren’t they bringing my bill to rush me out? Even after finding out i still felt guilty for hoarding tables for too long.

StillIRise1963,
@StillIRise1963@mastodon.world avatar

@QuietLurker 😂 I hear you. It’s sad that we’re confused the first time we’re treated like human beings instead of cows. Last summer, I went to visit some friends in MA. During dessert, they told us to pick up the pace. I was fucking disgusted. Not with the human telling me that, but with the fact that it works this way.

Agreed! Or twenty minute lunches to shove food Down your throat.

StillIRise1963,
@StillIRise1963@mastodon.world avatar

@Blinxeto Yeah, it’s really off putting. It’s like we’re animals being fed at the trough and we need to get out for the next herd, but we pay for it. I also hate the concept of drinking coffee on the run. Can’t we fucking sit down for a minute. Ugh.
