TIL that mustard plants grow very tall and have purple flowers that bees really like. I planted them because they're a great "grow literally anywhere" plant you can just yeet into the ground and leave to do their thing, and they're great at weed suppression and outcompeting grasses, but I didn't know they'd end up looking nice and making the bees happy too.

... now I'm in the mood to do some guerilla gardening.

@gsuberland I have seen bags of mustard seeds at the gardening store, so thats why :)

@gsuberland Interesting... Pointers for where to get seeds?

gsuberland,
@gsuberland@chaos.social avatar

@nblr got mine on eBay.

gsuberland,
@gsuberland@chaos.social avatar

@nblr I just ordered a shitload of seeds of various types, threw them into the soil, and let them sort the rest out themselves. the two varieties of mustard plant I put down took off in no time. low effort gardening ftw

@gsuberland @nblr good ol' brassica - similarly also rapeseed and so on are bee favourites

number137,
@number137@mastodon.social avatar

@gsuberland @nblr a good admixture are clovers and lupines - bumblebees favourites and with their long roots breaking up compacted ground and their symbionts add nitrogene

gsuberland,
@gsuberland@chaos.social avatar

@number137 @nblr I have to be careful with lupines because we dogsit occasionally

gsuberland,
@gsuberland@chaos.social avatar

for a moment I thought the bastard thistles were back (remember that saga?) but nope, just brassicas being hardcore as always

gsuberland,
@gsuberland@chaos.social avatar

and I really do mean it when I said they grow tall. there are a couple pushing five feet.

on the subject of plants, my rokita pepper plant is doing very nicely. it's not been long since I transplanted it from the seedling trays to this pot but it's already outgrowing it a bit. iirc they don't fruit in their first year so it'll be a while before I get peppers from it, but I also really like the plant in general. it has been absolutely drinking water recently so clearly it's been soaking up the sun and having a great time.

oops, lil bit of weird distorted topless action in the window reflection there lol

gsuberland,
@gsuberland@chaos.social avatar

although if we're talking about how much plants can do in a small pot, check out this absolute unit. this is the pot it arrived in when it had about six leaves, and as long as I keep it watered it just keeps growing and growing. I've got another pot to transplant it into but I haven't gotten around to it.

@gsuberland oh! I have one of these, too. Do you know what it is, because I don't and I'd like to..

@gsuberland@chaos.social avatar

@abetterjulie money tree (pachira aquatica)

@gsuberland@chaos.social avatar

well I say "haven't gotten around to it yet" but what I really mean is I have been using it as a mulch pot to try to bulk up the soil a bit for when I do transplant it.
