@brandonwrites another great one! And I agree, I do the same. I stopped following mainstream news like you say here for my mental health years back. And people can say that's a point of privilege, and it might be. But the fact is, a fully connected world like the internet gives us is new. People didn't have this barrage of information years ago. It's not natural for people to take in all the stress, nastiness, misery and and hate from the whole world. Basically, I'm just glad you stuck around. 😀

Mental health is so important. This is what I wrote in March, maybe you saw it. https://spacetimetech.wordpress.com/2024/03/06/the-24-hour-news-cycle

@jake4480 Thanks! I did read your post when I dove into your archives and I’m totally in agreement. It’s just too much and it’s not healthy at all.

Years ago, I ran across this comment on a blog and I saved it. I was so bummed I could get in touch with the author because he/she nailed it:
1/2

@jake4480 “...to summarize my ideas on the topic, I believe that through social media, electronics, and a growing need to be accepted, young adults are constantly being exposed to the harsh opinions, realities, and ideas that come when a world is shrunk down to fit inside a cellular phone. Not only is our personal life stressful, but now we take on the stress of others and the world around us.”

And to me that’s all the new is.

@brandonwrites oh nice! And woww yeah this is true. It's weird being our age now, there WAS no internet when I was a kid, we didn't all grow up connected like this. Will be weird to see how it all goes down. My kid is 17 now, online some but not obsessed with it, luckily. And he never saw me watch news. My dad watched TV news EVERY NIGHT and I kinda hated it. My in-laws still watch constant news. It's not good for older people either. The anger and stress. Useless and not worth it. Generational wealth-related problems not created by us that we're not gonna solve ourselves in one generation or two.

@jake4480 100% agreed. It’s outside of our control. My father didn’t watch the news much but now he does and he’s miserable. In fact, everyone I know that stays connected to the news is miserable. All that fear and anxiety being shoved down your throat… I just can’t.

@brandonwrites "everyone I know that stays connected to the news is miserable". THIS. It's like.. they don't connect it. I connected it and stopped. I had to. I mean, I would refresh news.google.com ALL DAY. People don't even know what a massive change to your mood it is. And I NEED that, as we've probably talked about and I've said on here, I have these stupid depressive issues for 30 years that I hate haha. My good days are fine and the meds, well, I need em. So I don't need MORE weird outside triggers for crap. Life is better when we focus on the small good we can do. Because that's all most of us CAN do. (and I have like, a billion interests, I'm never bored, I always have stuff to do haha)
