@jamesthomson@mattgemmell It’s quite weird to look at my life in photos. Random, often posed stuff from childhood. A massive gap at uni. (Email sort of happened while I was there, but I have very few photos, and only a very small number of videos, despite it being an art college.) Then low-res stuff from the mid-2000s, before everything ‘normalises’ around 2010 (in terms of reasonable image quality).
@jamesthomson@mattgemmell One of my genuine hopes for ‘AI’ (scare quotes used very intentionally) in the field of imagery is that it will soon get good enough to properly rescue low-res images. They might lack perfect authenticity, but I’d really love to have shots of eg my departed dog as a very young puppy, from a time when our cameras were rubbish and snapped blurry messes. (By the time he was about 18 months old, things had come a long way.) Same for some of my Iceland photos.
@jamesthomson@mattgemmell I love shots like this, but they’re so full of noise (Nikon E775 1600x1200 – and just <400k JPEG). Beyond my skills at least to make them good enough for properly big output, or even high-res modern desktops. (Obvs, we need to get back there again on our next trip, and hope the weather plays ball!)
@craiggrannell@jamesthomson@mattgemmell wonder what things like the super res mode does in Adobe. I upscaled a heavily cropped (raw) image last week and it did a decent job of it. If I remember tomorrow I might even shove a 775 image at it as I had one of those too
@jonbradbury@jamesthomson@mattgemmell I’ve tried a few upscalers. None are quite there yet for me, alas. The start point of these images is just too noisy. It needs some kind of fix for the JPEGness and then to run the upscale.
@craiggrannell@jamesthomson@mattgemmell true we probably ran them on fine rather than superfine too to squeeze a few more images onto the cards which won’t have helped.
@llamasoft_ox Nice rec. Have followed. We need to go back to these places ourselves as well. Mini-G has seen so little of the country, due to covid. We did at least get her to Geysir and Gullfoss during our most recent trip, but we need to head further afield, along the south coast, up to Akureyri way, and at some point to Vestmannaeyjar, which means a lot to her mum for family reasons.

I assume that's Jeff in a classic Peruvian jumper, a Steinar Lund-painted ST (does that still exist?), and a promo poster for Batalyx. Definitely a pic worth 1000 words, for the multi-faceted nostalgia vibe. 😎
@craiggrannell@jamesthomson@mattgemmell weirdly, earlier today and for a completely different reason, I was looking at an ancient pic of my old Performa 400 (LCII) in my student halls room.
