Duck update: The duck near our house is still there. My son suggested that we call him Ducklas.
I think he picked a good spot because the creek bank is a steep slope about 5-6 feet where he resides. I don’t know if coyotes can get to him. It would probably take a net or a snare at the end of a pole to catch him. We’ve been feeding him some bread.
I haven’t seen him fly. My guess is that someone abandoned him, but all the neighbors hope he stays.

Here’s a great list of safe-for-waterfowl foodstuffs, which include cucumber, corn, peas, beans, broccoli, beets, squash, flowers, alfalfa, tomatoes, eggplant, bananas (no peel), pineapple, pomegranate seeds, scrambled eggs, dry cat food or dog food, and rice.
If the duck lost its mate i think it wont nest anymore. It don't look injured, is it still migrating? Do you have something similar to The Audubon Society they are a good resource and if needed can help if injured or relocation to safe place.
Several ducks and geese decided my grandmothers backyard was their new summer home and returned yearly just because they liked it there.
@LeeFromVT@matthewguy it’s unusual for it to be there. I’ve never seen a duck take up residence here before.
I suspect that it may be tame and with clipped wings.
I’ll check in to the Audubon Society. That’s a good idea. Same for feeding it something other than bread.
