Pro Tip: Learn an old programming language. #Ada, #Erlang, #Pascal; #Forth or #Lisp if you’re hardcore. All of these have modern tooling. Don’t tie yourself solely to modern platform politics.
Google absolutely will abandon you, Microsoft will force you to upgrade, #C will never really improve, #Cpp isn’t going to get smaller or easier and #Rust is going to become one ugly custody battle as big-tech fights to control the only chance we’ve ever had to move on from C.
@epso At first Google & Microsoft made their own languages in a selfish attempt to own the platform (.NET, dart, go) when what the world needed was a language designed to solve a problem, not promote a platform. Now that Rust is here, corporations are wanting to extract value whilst giving nothing back and discarding the values that got the language there in the first place.
@kroc I'm especially sad about the Rust part because Rust is a really fun programming language to use (at least, imo) and I don't really want to see it become shit...
@thacuber2a03 Rust will continue to be a great language but we might not know what we’re missing out on if Rust gets ‘paralysis by committee’ as has become the case with C & C++ where even the right ideas can’t make it off the ground because too many internal forces are fighting each other for their preferred idea. Regardless, the memory-safe cat is out of the bag now and if Rust should ever fail to meet need, another language will arrise to meet that demand
