@flockofnazguls I am almost at that point. The only thing that keeps me coming back is researching things online I often type site:reddit.com in google to get real info on products, services, or tech.
Meta and Alphabet constantly parrot the inability of smaller platforms to provide the level of moderation required to provide a safe online environment, while patently failing to provide any safety or objectivity on their own platforms.
The reality is that fraud, misinformation and spam are most profitable when they target large monopolistic platforms. Targeting twenty platforms instead of two or three? Twenty times as much work.
to be fair in theory subreddits have their own dedicated mod teams that are separate from the owners/admin
however who are these moderators and are they acting in good faith? is sometimes a good question
additionally reddit's recent actions have driven of lot of mods away which has caused things to get worse
but yeah the owners of reddit only step in when something gets so bad they can't lean on their "well we're hands off and allow communities to self regulate"
I'm constantly amazed at the high quality of moderation on fedi -- run entirely by volunteers often paying out of pocket hosting costs -- compared to corporate platforms with paid moderators.
Not to mention the higher level of what you might call 'self regulation' or culture of respect fostered on here, compared to twitter or fedbook, where habitual disrespect to even people you agree with is the norm.
@flockofnazguls@ordosmarkzero experiencing the same thing, it's not great, especially when it gets you harassment from the mods when you point it out to other readers.
yeah I totally understand that, I mostly abandoned reddit a while back but more because I just found the way it works pushes a certain type of post/user to the forefront and I find a lot of what that is annoying/offensive
I do still occasionally pop into but I find most big subs suck and mainly go there when I'm stuck in a game or to read about something related to music production, even those can be annoying though
haven't heard of lemmy, is it just like reddit 2.0?
