ai6yr,

Replaced the door seal on my 1999 Toyota 4Runner: In terms of difficulty, give it a 1 out of 10 (simple). Remove 4 screws, snap out plastic panels in the way, pull old seal, replace with aftermarket replacement seal, snap panels back in, screw the screws back in. #auto #repair #autorepair #4runner

@ai6yr Something about this thread made me think of this #comedy sketch on @22Minutes 😅 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XbZLbMjM_5k

@ai6yr Where'd you get the door seal? I've been looking for a good aftermarket seal for my driver side door.

ai6yr,

@Pappy The one I got is from 1A Auto, random Internet retailer. Fits but I do find the door has to be shut hard to close properly, but I suspect that is just how new the rubber is and because it's not OEM molded to the frame. I am probably going to get the driver's side now, before they stop making them for this model year!

@ai6yr Right!? I have a '96. The driver's side door rubber is just shredded. I priced it at the dealer and it's like $200. I may try an aftermarket one though. I've also been meaning to hit the local pick-a-part which surprisingly has a few of these old trucks.

ai6yr,

@Pappy The 1A Auto one was 52.95... There are very, very few 4Runners (or Toyota Trucks) at our local Pick-A-Part yard, I wonder where they end up. https://www.1aauto.com/*/i/1AWSD00838?utm_source=TRQYouTube&utm_medium=TRQdescription&utm_campaign=TRQvideodesc&utm_term=hKEzjP1SBoI&utm_content=installationandrepairs

@ai6yr ah, good to know. I have a 3rd generation 4Runner too.

ai6yr,

@petes_bread_eqn_xls The driver's side door is actually in worse shape, I should probably fix that too... but didn't know how this third party seal would work... works great, so probably will fix the other one in the next few months (while the part is still available, LOL)

@ai6yr That sounds easy.

I have installed a dash cam in my Elantra. But the cable hangs straight down from behind the rearview mirror. 😣

There's plenty of cable, I just need to find a way of routing it around the top of the window, down the side and all the way back to the right side of the center console. That's where the plug is.

I have self-adhesive cable holders. I just need to find them.

ai6yr,

@mjausson I've done that on a few vehicles, by basically stuffing the cable in between the window and the rubber around the edges of the window. Works pretty well, but you kind of have to push it in there with your fingers until it wedges itself in there.

mjausson,

@ai6yr I'll have to check if that's possible. A small plastic thing for lifting up trim was included. But the cable is pretty thick. Much thicker than e.g. the cable for my iPhone charger.

I definitely don't want to mess with the headliner, because I'll never get it back up again.

ai6yr,

@mjausson Yeah, headliners are a PITA for sure....

ai6yr,

Probably would have been fine without a new one (wasn't letting in any rain), but every time my son gets in the car he would complain about feeling wind coming through the door 😂

mjausson,
@mjausson@mastodon.design avatar

@ai6yr Doesn't it give you a quieter ride, too?

ai6yr,

@mjausson For sure, although 1999 era 4Runners are loud... they don't build a lot of sound padding into trucks.
