@RadicalAnthro Thank you for the link - that's so fascinating!
I had to think about the global swap culture of embroidered patches for #Visiblemending via social media ... a very ancient behaviour!
Folk might be interested to know that across the month of May, Sustainable Fashion Week’s #MendItMay campaign invites people to mend one piece of clothing, celebrating repair as an act of empowerment.
I think I'll have a go at my #mending pile. If anyone wants to share mending projects or #craft pics, that'd be lovely.
The stats for why #repair is great are pretty compelling:
@tansy You find a lot of people's projects around the year by the hashtag #VisibleMending and it's also something for the group @visiblemending
Both can be subscribed.
My latest project was one of my favourite bags with a hole. #MendingMay
@FerdiMagellan Even better: We should not buy too much. It's not only the manufacturers, it's the people who buy #fastFashion.
I organise workshops for #VisibleMending, a statement for #repair. So often I meet people who laugh at me. The smallest stain, the slightest wear and tear: they throw almost new items in the bin instead of donating them.
For the manufacturer-waste: We would have to investigate their mafia connections to the dessert, it's not easy. The activists there are threatened.
#VisibleMending is not only for #clothes. This #colourful#handbag with abstract roses helped me against dark winter days. Suddenly I discovered this terrible hole and decided to mend it. It was not easy to find the fabric (more in the Alt texts) but I saved my handbag! 😊 And now it's a unique piece of individual design! @visiblemending@sewing
Why am I hanging around here? #Procrastination. I have to write a French promotional text for myself with trous de mites in meinem Gehirn.
The worst thing is that the topic only exists in English, but some visitors don't like foreign languages. 🙄 How do I tell them ... about my workshop for #VisibleMending! Je travaille sur la définition succincte en français. :clippy:
A question for menders: when/how do you decide if the fabric of a much-mended garment is worn too thin to be worth mending again (and it's therefore time for deconstruction/repurposing/compost etc)? #mending#VisibleMending
Finished the last round of #mending on these jeans.
Just in time so I'll have something to wear while I repair my other pair. I was annoyed about the other pair needing to be repaired again - until I realized I've had these jeans for about 20 years, so they've held up shocking well.
Preparing for voluntary service at our #culturalHeritage centre & #museum. On Sundays, we have a table with women who do #handicrafts and chat. This is targeted #animation so that people become curious, ask questions and watch. And learn more about our centre. Most of the women #embroider, I show #VisibleMending. Other colleagues give guided tours, baked cake, serve in the cafeteria and explain hot #chocolate today. There is a lecture and a special exhibition about chocolate.
I'm finally sticking to it again: new content on my Ko-fi page. To be enjoyed with and without coffee. ☕ :blobcatcoffee:
And 🤫 you find even #mosstodon there! https://ko-fi.com/naturematchcuts
In honor of the second anniversary of adopting our dog, I fixed the hole she chewed in the couch when we first got her in a totally inconspicuous way #visiblemending
I was rummaging through old photos and found this testimony of how I started (and then got hooked on) #VisibleMending. Moths had eaten holes in my favourite jumper. I was furious and swore revenge with a needle. Since I couldn't embroider properly or be accurate, I "needle-painted" yarn moths. Today, everyone thinks the jumper is an expensive designer piece. 🤭
The neckline is ripping apart on this t-shirt and I’d like to repair it with a neat looking visible mend. Does anyone have a suggestion for a simple, but fun #VisibleMending technique I could use? I don’t know any crosstitch techniques, but I do have some cool embroidery thread and needle on hand. https://www.reddit.com/r/Visiblemending/
Thanks for all the tips today! This was my first #VisibleMending project and I went with @ChurchHatesTucker’s suggestion of using a buttonhole stitch on my #BlackbirdRaum shirt. I fixed three holes and added a few unnecessary flourishes to the silkscreened illustration.
🧵 1/ My new #VisibleMending project: This linen-yarn T-shirt is a memento of my dog, who once got stuck at the bottom with his claw and tore a hole. It's darned in the shape of a yellow beetle. To make the whole thing more harmonious, I'm going to do a few small appliqués elsewhere today. @visiblemending
Your periodical reminder that all clothing is hand made by humans, usually underpaid!
Polyester doesn't breathe and sheds microplastics when manufactured, worn and washed!
Cotton farming takes immense amounts of water and pesticides!
Viscose can be made from recycled fibres & waste cellulose, but it's a fairly toxic process!
Linen is more ecological to grow but expensive!
@xgebi I'm happy to report that there's a pretty significant #Mending culture that is on the rise. And creative and joyful #VisibleMending often elevates it to an art form. We used to fix our clothes instead of getting rid of them, all we need to do is appreciate everything that goes into them!
